If it is not an exhaust leak then the next thing I would do is a compression test on both cylinders to rule out a leaking head gasket. Don't wait too long to do this because a bad head gasket will cause huge problems if you don't catch it quickly. If the compression is OK check to make sure your oil pump and related components are functioning properly. Next place to go after that would be the valve train.

First thing I would check for would be an exhaust leak. Look for black around any flange or joint

I have a 2005 harley FLHT that I have gpt the PO505 code. During cold starts the bike idles fine then after a restart it idles at 800 RPM. After driving for a good distance the idle will go back to 1000...

Hi Bjohnson16, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

sounds to me like you have a loose primary chain, though if your running a mikuni flatslide carburator they are notorious for making what sounds like a lifter tap,
