I would also look at the throttle cable at the air cleaner end. It may have slipped out of the clamp. I had this happen after some work I did to it.

Hi, I have an 11hp briggs and stratton engine on a rancher 2 ride on mower which I replaced. However this engine was given to me and is in excellent condition. I don't know if it had been reringed or

If the engine races and cannot be controlled with the throttle the throttle plate may have come off the shaft in the carb. Check the carb and see if the throttle plate is missing. If so you will need to retrieve it from the intake tract and replace with a new one being sure to use loc-tite on the screws.
To adjust the governor place the throttle control at full throttle. loosen clamp on external governor arm. with pliers turn shaft fully clockwise. Hold there and retighten clamp.

Revs don't drop quickly enough therefor no engine braking when riding. checked everything and replaced things in carburetors. this problem appeared overnight

Double check the throttle cable to make sure it has play. Same with throttle control and any device you may use to hold throttle in position. Check the Amal carb settings. http://www.oldbritts.com/amal_tun.html Check to make sure the engine slows without load.

Engine revs out control

It would help to know what bike this is. If you're sure your throttle is closed, this sounds like an air leak (air leaking into the intake from a vacuum hose with a split, or a cracked rubber intake boot, etc.)

The bike idles and runs great at idle but if I rev the engine and let go of the throttle there is a little rattle. Also if i crank the throttle it will rev to around 7500 and at wide open throttle the rpms...

the rattle may just be vibration or a failin bearing-old bike--carb shud be takin apart-cleaned-and ajusted if problems get worse--buy a repair manual thats what the pros use

I have a cb400n super dream which will not rev above 6500rpm. i have changed the plugs and oil and striped and cleaned the carbs, but the problem is still there.

Is that not the REDLINE? you cannot go beyond the redline please! Check your throttle cable connection for obstruction, and make sure the butterfly valves open to the max. Might be that the manufacturer installed some rpm limiter switch.

Wide open throttle when idling

shut it off and pull over so tried restarting it and immediatly it started revving outta control. so i shut it off.(i noticed a lil gas comin outta the far right carb.) the throttle won't snap back but i can force it back and i see the cable moving the butterflys open and shut (to the point where the tension on the throttle cable is released)but it won'd stop the revs. now i can't start it without having to turn it off cause it revs til redline. any ideas on what to look at first??? thanks. That would just continue to let gas go into the carb. Without air getting into the system that's not going to be the issue. So if the butterflys are closed and it's still reving like crazy then it's getting air from somewhere. Check to make sure all your vaccum lines are hooked up well and that there aren't any cracks in these lines or the carb boots. Make sure the carb boots are tightened well.,,

Check the O2 sensor that is attached just after the air filter. It may be dirty and could use a good cleaning or replace it.

I got this problem when I was messing with the throttle, I removed the hose that goes from the filter box to the throttle not knowing there was a sensor on that hose that tells the computer how much air is coming through the filter. So when I started the car without that hose attached, the sensor was not getting any air causing the engine to raise the RPMs until enough air was going through the sensor. Since it was not attached, the car redlined before I quickly shut it off.

If its dirty it will cause it to not read the airflow properly.
