There is a pipe plug that takes a Torx wrench to remove on the very bottom of the primary cover near the rear end of it. Once the oil is drained remove the derby cover and refill the primary. Fill right to the lowest edge of the clutch spring with the bike standing straight up. If you get too much oil in the primary, the clutch will feel like it's dragging and you won't be able to find neutral with the bike sitting still and the engine running. Good luck, Steve

How do I replace starter on 2002 sportster

First disconnect the battery cable. Then you'll have to pull the primary cover off the engine. Find the primary case drain plug underneath the rear of the primary case and remove it to drain the oil. Find the primary chain tensioner underneath the primary cover near the center and loosen the locknut. Turn the screw downwards to loosen the tension on the primary chain. Remove the left foot peg and take the "derby cover" off of the primary cover. Remove the spring and lock nut underneath the derby cover. Remove the bolts around the primary cover. As you gently pull the primary cover away from the engine, turn the clutch adjuster screw under the derby cover in a clockwise direction until the primary cover comes off. Remove the battery cable where it bolts onto the starter motor and the small single wire that plugs to the motor. Just above the clutch assembly there are two bolts. Remove these bolts and the starter will come off the engine. The bolts are different lengths. Make sure you mark which bolt goes where.

What is the pan right in front of the oil pan and has a pipe plug in it? What kind of oil goes in there and where do you put it in? I'm thinking it is the primary chain oil,but I'm not sure.

I suggest you read your owners manual and get acquainted with your motorcycle. The engine oil drain plug & the transmission drain plug is something you should know. One is a 5/8 hex head vertical plug and the other is a horizontal plug.....The engine oil drain hex bolt is located on the right side of the motorcycle and is removed/installed horizontally.
Transmission oil drain hex bolt is located on the left side of the motorcycle and is removed/installed vertically.

How do I change the starter on my 2005 1200 xl sportster

The first thing to do is to disconnect the battery. Then, you'll have to take everything on the right side of the bike off that impedes your getting to the starter. You may have to remove the exhaust system completely. Take the battery cable off the starter. Then, on the left side of the bike, loosen the lock nut on the primary chain adjuster beneath the primary and turn the primary chain tension adjuster bolt out about two turns or so. Remove the footpeg and shfiter from that side of the bike. Take the drain plug out and drain the oil out of the primary. Remove the derby cover and take the spring and lock nut out of the clutch release mechanism. Remove the bolts that hold the primary cover on. These bolts are different lengths and sizes. Make sure you make a drawing of which bolt goes where. Turn the clutch adjuster screw clockwise while you remove the outer primary cover. Do not take the clutch cable loose but rather just put the primary cover aside somewhere. Remove the two large bolts inside the primary located just above the clutch assembly. At this point, your starter should come out.

How do you remove the starter for replacement? Do I have to remove the primary cover? 2002 Harley Davidson Heritage Softtail Classic FLSTCI

Yes, you must remove the primary cover. But, first disconnect the battery. We'd love for you to be able to type for the rest of your life. With the battery disconnected, find the drain plug on the bottom of the primary near the rear of it and drain the primary. Then remove the outer primary cover. Take the small bolt that holds the jackshaft to the starter out and pull the jackshaft out of the seal and coupling. The coupling goes in a certain direction, mark it as to which way it goes back in. Then, go to the other side and remove whatever is in your way, generally this means removal of the exhaust system. Then you'll probably have to take the two large bolts at the top of the oil tank out and take the rubber mounts loose from the tank. You do not have to remove the oil tank but generally you'll have to lift it a bit to get to the two large socket head bolts that hold the starter on. Take the battery cable loose from the starter and the single wire that goes to the solenoid of the starter. Then remove the two large bolts. The starter should come out now.

I am switching from syn oil to reg hd oil on a 1992 flstf. Do I need to drain the engine case? If so, where is the plug located? Is there anything else I need to be aware of? THANKS

I would purchase a Harley Davidson repair manual or get one on CD from ebay not as much as a paperback and just as good. The repair manual is a mechanics best friend. Remember buy one it is the best friend you can have when doing maintenance on you harley.

The drain plug can be hard to find. In the 2001 Fat Boy, it is in front of the back motorcycle tire between the Fat Boy's rear shocks.

To do the oil change you need to warm up the oil so it drains better.

Tilt the motorcycle to its right side and position your oil catchment container under the oil plug.

Use your wrench set to unscrew the oil drain plug. In a 2001 Harley Davidson Fat Boy, you need a wrench that will fit a 1/4-inch screw.

Drain the oil. While oil is draining from your Harley Davidson, use the time to clean out the magnet and rubber ring positioned under the oil drain plug.

Remove and replace the oil filter after the oil has drained. Refill with 3 to 4 quarts of engine oil. Replace all parts, including drain plug.

Remember the HD manual will tell you how to check the level of primary fluid needed. Each HD is different and needs different amounts.

You check your primary fluid level through the inspection cover, which is the oval cover in the middle of the primary cover. You'll need a T25 Torx wrench to remove the bolts. Have a new inspection cover gasket in case you need it.

Add the fluid through the inspection cover. You can use any kind of oil petroleum or synthetic as long as it does not contain friction modifiers.

replace the gasket on the inspection cover if needed. Tighten bolts finger tight; then tighten the bolts at 10 foot pounds. Start with the top bolt and then tighten the bottom bolt. The third bolt is the right one, and the left bolt is last.

Need to change my starter on 2005 heritage softail classic, need some instructions

First, disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Then, drain the oil from your primary. Remove the floor boards, shifter or anything else you need to remove in to remove the outer primary cover. Remove the outer primary cover. Remove the small bolt holding the starter jackshaft in and remove the jackshaft. There is a coupler that connects the jackshaft to the starter motor. If it comes out with the jackshaft, mark it so that you know which way it goes back in.

Now, on the right side of the bike, remove the exhaust system or whatever might be in the way of getting the starter off. Remove the bolts holding the oil tank but don't remove the tank. All you need is a little room that you get by lifting the tank up a bit. There are two large bolts holding the start onto the inner primary. Remove these two bolts and unplug the single wire going to the solenoid and the battery cable from the starter. Now, you can work the starter out from under the oil tank and off of the bike.

Good Luck

Leaking oil from primary cover, I road my bike to work is it safe to ride it home . I checked the engine oil it's still full . and how hard is it to change this cover?

All old harleys leaked oil, so its no big deal. First try tightening all bolts to primary cover, they should be allen head, so you will need a allen wrench of correct size. To change gasket you will first need to remove floorboard to primary bolts, then all the allen bolts. Put a pan under to catch oil. scrape old gasket off and install new gasket with a small bit of rtv to hold it in place. Put everything back together.

Changing fluids

Trans plug is under the Primary cover ( Left side ) and the Oil line is under the frame on the left side. Look for a oil line with a plug attatched to it. Run the bike up to operating temp. Primary and trans are the same thing ( Sport Trans fluid ) 1Qt in the primary ( fill throught the little cover on the side of the primary, and fill the oil through the oil tank. Put a little oil in the filter too, before installing, this will give the motor a little bit of oil until the rest of it makes it way through. You'll also need 1 p/n 11105 for the drain plug on the primary.
