Cold engine starts and these symptoms are common, cause? Lean running at start thanks to EPA, wait a few minutes until you feel heat in heads of engine, then easy throttle until fully warm.

If the motorcycle has sat more than 6 months with reformulated gas, it more likely has jets plugged up and will need a carb cleaning. Plug jets will cause sputtering and bogging down when the engine is loaded.

Could still have a carb problem. Have you changed the fuel filter? That is always the first thing to do. Running on could also indicate a timing problem. How about the timing belts? have the been looked at lately? They may be stretch a bit or loose. Should not have to use premium in a Goldwing.

Sputtering and pops

sounds like a carb problem sticky floats. they work in exactly the same way as in ur toilet. cutting off fuel at a certain level. if the fuel goes over that level it will begin to flood, acting like you continually have the choke on or even worse. it cud be electrical but because you say you can smell gas i recon carbs. if you put the tap on prime(if it has that option) does fuel start leaking, if so this confirms it. alternatively leaving the engine running to allow the vacuum fuel tap to remain open, does fuel start leaking.

You'll have to check for spark at the plugs and fuel pressure next time it quits.
Could be ignition module, a relay, fuel vapor lock, or a list of other things.

Check that the connection of the wires in the block connector (near the fuel tap) from the generator to the main loom is good. When checking the the ignition timing an ohm meter is connected to the black wire at this connector, sometimes causing the wire to 'pop' out of it's location and causing intermittent/complete ignition failure.

get some carb cleaner and start the motor then spray the carb cleaner around the outside ot the intake to check for leaks. I have seen several just like that and the intake manifolds was leaking air through them. If yours is leaking when you spray the carb cleaner on them the motor will rev letting you know it is sucking the cleaner into the motor.

Will ethanol in 93 octane cause the coughing poping out of the air intake?

Not likely. You probably do have a plugged circuit in the carburetor though. Remove the carb and clean. Pay special attention to the pilot and main jets and circuits. Blow out with carb cleaner and air. If you pull the idle mixture screw, (recommended, also, screw the idle mixture screw inwards counting the turns as you go before removing), be sure to remove the washer and "o" ring with the mixture screw, sometimes they will not come willingly. Clean the carburetor thoroughly, re-install idle mixture screw to number of turns out, (as you counted before removing), re-install carb on bike and test.

I recently replaced a carb kit on my ariens model#938010 ss322 and it will not keep running,it does not have a diaphram.any suggestions?

We're talking about a briggs or kohler motor with a bowl type carb- correct? Im assuming you are sure you are dealing with a fuel issue.

To what extent did you rebuild the carb? Did you replace the needle? Make sure all passages are clear? check the float level? Check the setting of the idle air screw ( if present)?

Did you check the quality of fuel coming out of the fuel line and did it have good flow? Its easy to have water in your fuel system and inadvertantly fill your clean rebuilt carb up with water/ bad fuel.

In short, once you've narrowed it down to a fuel issue, youve either missed something in the carb and will need to go through it again or there is bad fuel in your system or the fuel is not reaching the carb.

Harley runs nice in 40-50 deg. weather only

Hey Tom, gonna try and help ya here...typical vapor lock/overheating is what your describing and i sure hear a lot of it w/harleys...are you using a very high grade synthetic oil , like castrol Syntec Actevo ? are you filling up w/ premium gasoline ?
make sure your timing is not too far advanced and don;'t let it idle too low...when you come to a stoplight stand up for a strech while letting your engine get air not blocked by your legs....all these things will help greatly......Good luck to you friend...Tim
