Question about 2004 Harley Davidson XL 883 Sportster

883 to 1200 conversion just completed on 2007 sportster. Bike has drag pipes and spike free flow air cleaner and a terry terminal velocity tuner. It is running lean as the spark plugs are showing white. It pops and spits and sputters and will not idle. What can i do

When I did mine I had to remove the fuel filter because it slowed down the fuel so much that the carbs would starve if I got on it the mor air u **** the mor fuel u need jet it up and let the go juice flow I now only get about 25 mpg as apposed to 45 to 50 before but **** it runs gooood

I resently install a new screaming eagle high flow intake along with new pipes and had the bike tuned, if I went back to the stock air cleaner would the bike need retuned again 2010 Electra glide


it may but quality air cleaners do not affect air low velocity or change tuning of the engine you can get the air flow specs for each air filter by googling the name of the filter and reading the air velocity graphs for each filter brand

1979 xls sportster. At about 3000 to 3500 bike begins to lose power and back fires. Not sure why. Any suggestions?


It sounds like ignition to me. Most likely coil or stater. I would start with the coil.

I have a 91 FXR that was professionally rebuilt. I added straight pipes to the bike and now it runs terrible. I'm using an E carb, does anyone know if there's problems with this combo?


Yes, there is!
It's called STRAIGHT PIPES!
Straight pipes never run right, except at wide open throttle on the track.
Beings you're running a (S&S) E carb, read item number 10, here:

It says, "NOTE: Drag or straight pipes can prevent you from obtaining optimum carburetor performance."
You didn't say if you were running the standard S&S air cleaner or not, but line 11 states" If the S&S teardrop air cleaner is being replaced with an aftermarket air cleaner be sure to remove the auxiliary bowl vent screw. Never use a velocity stack on a street driven motorcycle! Poor throttle response will be experienced."

I've heard great things about the Terry components tuner but havnt used one yet. If u plan on doing any motor work or anything in the future I would use the hd super tuner. The power commander is also really nice and there are alot of maps available online for free. If u have a local dealer or shop u like using, see what they prefer to tune with on their dyno, that way if u have an issue with the bike they will be familiar with the component. Good luck!

not a good idea unless you upgrade the air cleaner to a high flow or screaming eagle...bike is tuned to run with restricted pipes..if you change one you need to change the other..with the 06 you could also need a download or fuel management system..

Hello. Have a 2007 with Samson true dual fishtails. Beautiful sound on riding but would like to get more sound at idle?


Too many people, while attempting to get the perfect sound, screw up the performance of their bike. If the bike performs good and sound pretty good, I'd advise leaving it alone.

Though the years, I've worked on more Ironhead Sportsters than I care to think about because someone put a set of drag pipes on them. They love the sound but soon realize that the bike is running really crappy. So, they bring it to me and I tell them the sad truth. An engine has got to have a little backpressure on the exhaust system in order to perform correctly. Once they put a set of free flowing mufflers on the bike and feel the difference, they're sold.

WE HAVE A 2007 ROAD KING. THE COMPUTER WENT OUT


I hope you are speaking of the ECM, otherwise my advice may not be of any value. First if you have any modifications to the bike such as pipes & air cleaner, etc. then your issue would be magnified. The information in your "computer" as it relates to how the bike runs is called a MAP. The map defines idle speed, desired air fuel ratio (AFR), rev limit, monitors O2 sensor information, and much, much more. So if the MAP is say for a stock bike and yours has pipes, etc. then it will run poorly. I would call the dealer that replaced the part for you and ask if they downloaded the right MAP for your bike.
Without special equipment (i.e Screamin Eagle Race Tuner SERT) you cannot make changes yourself.

Stage 1 Low rpm backfire


If you are running straight pipes they might not give you the right back pressure. This can be reolved by either going back to riginal pipes or instaling a bolt into the pipes about 5 inches in to make back pressure. Another thing? Did you have the bike's electronic ignition reset after you messed with it?
