Question about 1982 Suzuki Gs 550 L

Clutch slipping in second gear only

82 GS650 Suzuki slipping in second gear only. Just changed the cam shifter out due to jumping out of all gears. This slipping is smooth with no clanging of gears, just feels like I am pulling the clutch lever in.

Not sure what I need to add, Last fall the clutch was jumping out of all the gears. I tore the motor down and found a part broken on the shifter cam. Replaced the shifter cam and now there is no jumping of any gears, only slipping in second. It will go for about 5 seconds in second gear then it acts like I pulled the clutch lever in with the throttle in the same position. If I try to get on it a little in second it will slip right away.

Wave washer on the face of the clutch basket may have lost its tension, clutch friction plates may be wearing thin as she's an old girl. Some automotive (car) oils not specifically designed for wet clutches when used in a bike will cause the clutch to slip as they are designed to leave a deposit on friction areas. This will require a thorough flush and a few oil changes in quick succession.
Check the return function of the clutch release arm on the crankcase, they can bunch up the rubber shroud and not return fully. Good luck and Cheers.

Have trouble selecting gears on 650 bandit gsf mainly from 3rd to 6 gear changing up, not as bad changing down gears don't go into gear straight away if I change quickly helps somtimes

Hi, Clive and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch dragging slightly.
2. Primary chaincase overfilled with lubricant.
3. Corners wore off shifter clutch dogs.
4. Shifter return spring bent or broken.
5. Bent shifter rod.
6. A loose shift lever on shifter shaft.
7. Shifter forks sprung.
8. Shifter pawl needs adjusting.
9. Heel/toe shifter coming in contact with the floorboard.
10. Transmission oil too heavy.

1998 arctic cat 300..... hard to shift you have to

I do not know much if anything about an arctic cat but if you have a shifter you have some kind of a transmission and if you need to get it into gear or neutral but cannot do so without rocking the machine or the shifter back and forth a slipping clutch would not likely have anything to do with the problem. You likely should not be trying to shift gears with the clutch engaged and the clutch normally should be FULLY slipping ie completely disengaged when you are shifting. It sounds like you could have sticking shifter linkage parts, worn shifter parts or internal transmission parts, bent shifter forks, worn shifter cam or drum grooves or shifter fork pins or other worn parts or maybe even low or no transmission fluid.

2006 Harley Electra-Glide, Twin cam 88, six speed tranny slipping/popping gears when under acceleration. Multiple pops. Tried adjusting clutch and it got worse. Mainly in lower gears but does it...

If your clutch is not slipping check your shift linkage joints. Rocking the bike lets you know your tranny has gears but the shifter pawl may need adjustment

82 GS650, slipping in second gear only. this is a smooth action that is happening no hard banging. it was junping out of all the gears before I replaced the cam shifter and it was making some major noise....

Ok got it, you have a worn or bent shift fork and worn gear cogs transmission work needed to fix this problem. If you decide to have it repaired make sure to inspect all the gears and forks.
Good luck.

2ND GEAR SLIPPING

If all gears have been changed for new ones and it still jumps out of second it is most likely to be a bent selector fork.

Bent shifter levers or a cause most mechanics miss, chain is jumping over rear sprocket.
