Either the kick start is not tighten properly to the axis to which is connected, or else the teeth is worn out on either the axis or the kick start. If this is not the case then you have a bigger problem which may require disassembling the gear box in order to find further causes of this problem.Hope this helps.

Sounds like the key cylinder contacts is at fault on the normal position. you may be able to jump this for a test.
Maybe also confirm the starter is retracting after it initially engages the flywheel. Sometimes heavy corrosion in the starter prevents this from returning and would stall the engine as the gears stay engaged.

2002 honda accord 5 speed.Drove it home parked .When I tried to go the next morning I could not shift to any gear If I turn off the engine I can shift ??

Any noises when you engage the clutch or shift? Could be several things. If it is hydraulic clutch, check the master cylinder level. It will be on the firewall just outside where pedals fasten to floor. Use dot 3 brake fluid to fill it if necessary. If it is full may have trouble with pressure plate and trowout bearing binding up.

I have a 2005 RMZ 450. The rod on the crank shaft blew apart and i had to replace both cases, crank, piston and rings, get the cylinder fixed and plated. I had a local Suzuki shop replace everything. ...

Sounds like your ratchet gear is mis aligned, when you put the ratchet gear together it has alignment marks that have to line up when you insert it back in the case...The kick shaft being bent slightly should not prevent the engine from turning over. I hope this helps.

Starter works but gears seem to free spin, wont crank engine

sounds like the sprag clutch has failed. If you can see the large gear that sits behind the rotor and its turning but the rotor isnt turning the sprag clutch has failed. Very costly. usualy you would have a missed start eg not engaging every now and then before this fails all together.

Have 350 dirt bike kick start was ok left bike shed for a while used kickstart ok but next time it appears jammed wont move tried rocking in gear to free up but no go. Do you have an idea as to what might...

Assuming the engine will turn over, the ratcheting assembly on the kick starter may be worn. Remove the kick start lever and then the side cover, (place a pan under the bike to catch any oil). The kick starter is basically just a gear and a spring; the gear will in some manner engage the flywheel, (sometimes indirectly). Make sure there is nothing obvious wrong such as broken teeth or debris lodged in the mechanism.

The other possibility if the engine does not move when rolled is the timing chain may have jumped teeth on the cam sprocket. To get to this remove the gas tank, remove all but the rear engine mounting bolts, remove the valve cover. To check remove the fly wheel cover set the piston to Top Dead center, (TDC) on the compression stroke and make sure the mark on the cam sprocket is at the top of the sprocket and not off set.

Good luck.

Engine cranks but won't catch,, then floods,, gears are sticky as well My bkie died on the way home from a long trip,, just stopped,, I got it started for about two minutes then it died again, and will not...

To begin with, do not try to start the engine with the transmission in gear. Shift the transmission to neutral. If the bike tries to move forward when you try to start the bike with the transmission in gear and the clutch lever pulled in, the clutch cable needs adjusting as the clutch is dragging and not completely disengaging.

If the engine is flooding, it sounds like you have trash in the carburator. Take your air filter off and try to start the engine. From a distance, look into the carburator and see how much fuel is going into the carburator. There should be a small spray of fuel if you turn the throttle grip. Otherwise there should be very little fuel going into the carb. If you see fuel pouring into the carb, you've got trash in your carburator. Unless you are very familiar with carburators, this is a job best left to a certified mechanic. You may have fouled your spark plugs as well. Either clean your plugs or buy a new set and install them. Sportsters are tough on spark plugs. Once they get fouled, they simply will not clear up on their own.

More than likely your clutch is fine, not burnt out. It simply needs to be adjusted, thats all.

The leak could be coming from most anywhere. Clean the bottom of the engine, take a short ride and then have a look. If you can't figure it out that way, put something under the kick stand to stand the bike as near to straight up as you can without danger of it falling over. Put a clean piece of newspaper under the bike and let it sit overnight. Look for the oil drip on the paper and then look straight up.

Kick start is jammed

Put the bike in 3rd, 4th or 5th gear, the higher the better. Sit on the bike, with your hand off the clutch lever, and rock the bike back and forth to rotate the clutch hub. This might free up the lever. You will need to drain the oil and remove the right side casing to see and service the kick starter. If I recall correctly, there is a spring clip that allows the kick gear to engage the clutch hub. The piece could be broken, weak or out of position.

Yamaha XV 1600 Will not start. Starter motor works but will not engage the engine to turn it over. The battery is new. This has happened suddenly and without warming. Anyone know what the problem is?

The sprag clutch that kicks the starter gear into the flywheel is not engaging. This may involve splitting the engine/transmission case if you have to clean or replace that mechanism. I have had success running CD-2 as described here. You might try that before tearing into the bike.

Jamed kick start

Sounds more like a seized engine to me. When a kick starter breaks it will be when you're kicking it. If the engine died and the bike doesn't turn over with a kick it's probably locked up. Try pushing it back and forth in a higher gear and see if the engine turns over when you let out on the clutch,
