SOURCE: battery not charging
Check the voltage at the battery with the engine running at 1300 rpm or so. The volt ohmmeter should read 14+ volts. If not, check wire connectors from flywheel to battery. Be sure they are clean and tight. If no wires are bad then the charging system should be checked at a dealers shop.
You would not want to buy a stator that you can't return and then find the regulator or rectifier was the problem. There are times when the dealer is your friend.

Sounds like a wiring/connector problem. Could be the common earth connection that has corroded. Check all wires that go to BOTH the rev counter and the speedo, since both went out at the same time.
