Yes, use full synthetic motorcycle oil, your manufacturer says yes. About a 5-w30 weight. Hope this helps.

Do I check the oil level on my Suzuki Volusia while it is on the kick stand or do I check it with the bike being held evenly level?

The bike must be level and not on the side stand. If you look closely, you should see the oil level index marks to the side of the sight glass. Just like the marks on an oil dipstick, as long as the oil level is between the marks, you're OK.

What are the oil change intervals on a 2004 Suzuki Volusia 800?

After the first 11,000 miles Suzuki recommends changing the oil every 4,000 miles or every six (6) months.

Amount of oil

The Engine oil capacity on the VL 800 is:

3.2 U.S. Quarts (3000 ml) without a filter change

3.6 U.S. Quarts (3400 ml) with a filter change.

While Suzuki does not expressly recommend a filter change with every oil change, I change the filter anyway. I don't like the idea of leaving nearly a half quart of old, dirty oil in my machine.
