Why does my 1996 honda shadow only run on one

Why does my 1996 honda shadow 600cc only run on one cylinder. One pipe gets hot the other stays cold. The bike sat up for about a year. It starts and idles just fine but to take off requires a lot of throttle and feathering the clutch. I have not checked the plug yet, i'm going to do that while I wait on suggestions.

1999 honda vt1100 running lean

First try to sync the carbs (link 1), if you can not balance them, then you have to rejet the slow and main jet. Do not drive the bike without sync the carbs, overheating can destroy cylinder, rings, cam chain etc.

The chrome trans housing on my 2002 Honda ACE VT750 is very hot to the that normal?

Yes, your motor and transmission are going to get hot. They are both lubricated with the same hot oil. Liquid cooling of the radiator sets the temperature of the cylinders around 195 degrees F but everything else is going to get that hot or hotter. This is normal, and for heavens sake keep small animals and children away from the pipes and mufflers.

96 Shadow. 1 cyl cuts out after heating up. Then engine runs on 1 cylinder.

After heating up.. I would check for spark on that cylinder when it is warm... could be a coil going bad.
Just a thought...

Your clutch plates have lasted 25 years. It is probably time to get some new plates. Have your dealer get you a set of Barnett clutch plates.

Carburator adjusting or no gas

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, if there is spark on the plug of the front cylinder, then it would be a fuel issue. Pls try:
  • Rig a fuel bottle to replace the fuel tank;
  • Remove the airbox assembly to expose the carb;
  • Start/run the bike, spray carb cleaner on the open carb;
  • note the RPM or sound of engine. Determine if front cylinder will fire even erratically. You could also try the exhaust pipe if it warms up (pls be careful might be overly hot);
  • rev the bike then cover the carb mouth of the front cylinder with the palm of your hand;
  • there should be a strong suction indicating that vacuum is created when on the intake stroke and intake valves are opening;
  • the palm of your hand should be wet with fuel, if not carb issue;
  • might require a rebuilt.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.
