Clean the carburetor out with a can of carb cleaner and check for air leaks in the inlet manifold, change the fuel filter and look at the valve clearances and timing. Check for intake leaks by spraying some carb cleaner around all the joints in the intake path. It could also be you bought bad gas, dump the fuel tank out and replace with fresh fuel

I have a 2005XL 1200. After riding about 15miles, the bike bogs down after I stop and try to accelerate. At 70mph and up it's ok. At the low end it wants to die. I have to keep it accelerating

Stalling/popping while riding, takes tons of gas to get it to engage in first. Problems continue in second gear. It idles fine and starts right up. Bike is a 2002 Sportster XL883, but it has been upgraded...

It sounds like the accelerator pump has gone bad on you. Take the air filter off and with the engine OFF, crank the throttle to wide open. Watch the brass nozzle just inside the mouth of the carb for a sqirt of gas. If you don't see the shot of gas going into the carb, youe accelerator pump diaphragm needs to be replaced. This will require that the float bowl, and possibly the entire carb, be removed from the engine. Take the small accelerator pump cover off the bottom of the float bowl and change the diaphragm. This would be my best guess.

Good Luck
Steve

2005 1200 sportster bogs when idling

It could be any number of things but I would tend to think that it's something to do with the carburetor. It could be something as simple as it's idled too low. The idle speed should be about a thousand RPMs or so.

Your bike also came from the factory jetted extremely lean. A "jet kit' may help the problem in that it will richen the mixture up just a bit making the transition from the idle circuit to the midrange circuit smoother.

Next, you may have a problem with the accelerator pump on your carb. If the pump is not working correctly. Remove the air filter cover and element so that you can see into the carb. With the engine NOT running, crank the throttle to wide open position while looking into the carb. You should see a stream of fuel being squirted into the carb out of a brass nozzle in the throat of the carb. If you don't see this, you need to have the carb serviced.

2003 hd 1200 xl - ran fine for 20 mile ride, seems to be running out of fuel, will not accelerate or rev-up. restarts well, idles well, what should i check first?

Have you tried StarTron enzyme fuel treatment in the tank? It eats the bacterial crud that grows in today's gasolines and makes the difference between stalling out every time I start off from an intersection and running perfectly on my ride.
