The brush's are inexpensive and not too hard to replace. I have been told you can detach and take off the two mounting bolts, and gently slip the starter out of the motor. Just be careful not to dislodge the gear in the motor the starter spline slips into.

Hi, Steve and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Faulty starter button/switch.
6. Faulty jiffy stand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
7. Security alarm needs a reset.
8. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
9. Main fuse or circuit breaker blown or faulty.
10. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

Starter replacement 2008 Mailbu

Maybe the starter control circuit has an issue

Try jumper cables to the starter before you remove it

Try just a small wire to the solenoid,it could be bad
& you don't need the entire starter

Any starter only has 2 or 3 bolts

If you need help ,then you dont have
the tools or skills to be under there

Bought 1981 honda goldwing gl1100 and I dont have any power when I turn key on. I have replaced the relay and still no power at all. can you help me?

Hi, Kevin before testing any electrical component in the Starting System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand, clutch, neutral safety switch.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid, starter have failed or circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
14. Check for engine trouble codes.

Starter will not turn over

Just uncap the wire going to the plugs. Kick the starter and hold the naked end of the wire close to the body. If you don't get a sharp sparking from the ends of the wire to the body then you'll know there is insufficient current being supplied to it by start solenoid...............sodeep

My 2000 Jimmy has problems with a cold start, and just today, it died on me while driving. I was stuck in traffic and had the A/C running. My radio sayed on but the vehicle hesitated during acceleration...

If you get absolutely nothing from the vehicle when turning the key, first, check your battery voltage. On your dash, the battery voltage should show ~10-12 volts with the key in the on position only. It will read ~14-16 volts with the engine running. If your battery does not satisfy both these test conditions, replace your battery and replace it with a battery that is recommended for your engine size.

If replacing the battery does not do the trick and you are still getting absolutely nothing, not even a chirp from the starter, or if it just clicks without turning the engine, it is most likely your solenoid. The solenoid is attached to your starter and engages the starter gear in order to turn over your engine. In the cold this will be more apparent. If after you've replaced the battery and the problem still exists, replace the entire starter (try a used one first - you can typically get one from a junk yard for around $35). This project is not difficult. Just removed the front passenger side wheel to expose the wiring, detach and remove starter from underneath (two bolts).

If after replacing the entire starter it still won't start, try buying just the solenoid only (brand new) and replace it. This will require you to remove the entire starter again, unfortunately. You will need a special female torx set to remove three screws and replace only the solenoid. This is the cheapest route to go. Good Luck!! It worked for me. If you want to skip a few steps and go right to a brand new starter, go for it, but for those who can't afford the price of one or the labor, this will work good for you.
