150-165 foot pounds on any Evolution engine 100 foot pounds on the Shovelhead. Two lines of Loctite 271 red in the threads of the nut.

Make sure your primary chain is adjusted properly and the compensating sprocket nut is torqued to spec. The comp nut is inside the primary cover, on the front sprocket.

Torque specs on 69 shovelhead compensated sprocket? Installed it and not functioning? I have been told it has to be torqued down AND THEN backed off?? Can you help? Please and thank you


I don't understand what you mean by it's not functioning? The spring is far to strong for you to operate it by hand. Now, in 1969, there were two types of compensator sprockets used. One was the conventional type with a spring cup that had "spring washers" inside of it and used a standard size socket to put the nut on with. The other used a coil spring and used a special tool called a "Pin wrench" to put the nut on and off with. They simply torqued to 100 foot pounds of torque.

Now make sure you have the compensator assembled correctly. Go here to see the two types of compensator sprockets. The 1969 was a "transition year" bike and there are lots of variations that appear on this model year.

I need the torque specs on a rear axle pinion nut for a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 4/4 Cummins, Automatic.


The pinion nut does not have a torque spec. as in how tight the nut is. The amount of torque is measured in bearing preload. You will need a "torque to rotate" torque wrench. If you are using new bearings the torque spec. is 15-25 in. lbs. If you are using your old bearings the torque spec. is 10-20 in. lbs to rotate. To measure this you will need to tighten the nut in small increments then use the torque to rotate wrench to turn the pinion without the carrier/ ring gear installed. Repeat until desired torque is reached.

I don't have one - I am fixing a problem and need a drawing/spec sheet w/torque specs for motor hub nut and clutch hub nut and are these two hub nuts right or left hand thread.


Regrettfully, you didn't tell me what year or model bike you're working on. If it's an Evo engine or a Twin Cam, Torque the compensator sprocket (engine nut) to 150-165 Foot pounds. Put two lines of Loctite #271 (red) in the nut.

The mainshaft nut inside the clutch torques to 70-80 foot pounds with one line of Loctite #271. This nut has LEFT-HANDED TREADS.

Compensator nut


150-165 foot pounds with two LINES of Loctite 271 red in the threads of the nut. Yeah, it's tight and you will need a primary locking bar to lock the primary so that the engine will not turn over while applying torque to the nut. A primary locking bar is a piece of rectangular metal stock cut the precise length to fit into the primary chain teeth on engine sprocket and the outer clutch shell in order to prevent the spocket from turning. Need the torque specs on clutch for a 85 FLHTC


The torque specs are the same as with any Evolution engine. The compensator sprocket 150-165 foot pounds.
Clutch hub nut (left handed threads) 60-80 foot pounds.

Use Loctite 271 on threads. Two lines in nut on Compensator and one line in clutch hub nut.

Need the torques specs for the 2 nuts on the clutch on a harley


50 ft lbs and it is a left is tight nut...don't worry about adjuster nut on clutch just good ole tight will work on that one. compensating nut ( one in front) is 150 ft lbs.

Sound like a loose Compensator nut.

The compensator nut is the part (the nut) that attaches the front sprocket to the motor crank.

When a cylinder of a v-twin fires there is a very strong power pulse. To keep from shaking the bike and rider apart these pulses have to be "smoothed" out. Harley does this by NOT solidly attaching the front sprocket to the engine - they use a "compensating sprocket".

A crank shaft extension, double sprocket, sliding cam, and a stiff spring together form a "compensating sprocket". When a cylinder fires, the power stroke is smoothed out by the action of the compensator cam and springs.

The compensator nut is what holds the compensating sprocket assembly on the crank.

There are a LOT of forces acting on this nut and sometimes the nut loosens up. A loose compensator nut results in a compensating sprocket that can move laterally on the crank. A loose compensator nut therefore is one potential source of engine vibration.

Harley-Davidson issued service bulletin a while back that changed the procedure for tightening the compensator nut, after a spate of bikes had problems with this nut working loose.

Check with your local Dealer to get the correct torque spec and procedure for your year bike.
