Question about 2005 Triumph Speed triple

Speed Triple engine failing to start when warm

I have a 09 Speed Triple (less than 1000 on clock). I start it on the button and ride 10 miles. Stop the bike and it fails to start. Impression of low battery eg. dials live and engine turns over very slowly and then is stops turning over. After leaving to cool engine turns over and starts. Had shop carryout checks and they can find nothing wrong (regulator, battery, charging OK). Other times have jumped started the bike before engine is cool. This has happeded several times but the shop has not been able to replicate the problem. What could the problem be??

The problem is the regulator rectifier which gets too hot because it's facing towards the engine so can't dissipate it's heat easily..

You need to replace it with this exact part.

Kit, Regulator Brkt/Link Lead
Part Number: T1301234

You should be able to do this yourself, its easy.

If it will jump start before it cools, I would still suspect the battery. or even the starter motor.
An auto electrician should be able to load test the battery( the bike shop likely just put a meter on it and it read 12v) they could also check the current draw of the starter.

The engine still will be a little tight but this shouldnt stop it running unless something is wrong or seriously overheating.
it may even just get better when it runs in some more, this is probably what the shop is hoping.

I can hear a lot of valve train noise, carried it back at 1000 miles. HD said bike sounded good, but sure they would. 09 evo 1200.

Hi Anonymous, find a friend who also has a fairly late model XL 1200 and swap bikes and go for a ride for an hour or so, then you will know for sure and so will the guy/gal riding your bike. Also you can try running SYN 3 Harley oil it runs cooler than non-syn also run an oil cooler. Engine oil temp should be around 180 to 220. The cooler the engine the quieter the moving parts to a point. Good luck

Check the inline fuse that is normally close to the battery. Also try again with the battery connected to the charger. Most batteries only have a life of around 5 to 6 years, often less on a bike due to vibration.

Check the power in the battery. It may seem charged up but in fact the battery could be no good. Get it checked out at a store that sells batteries. They should do it free.
