If you're talking about a Big Twin, which my thread is indicating, the problem is the "overrunning clutch" in the starter. This is the part that has a "one way bearing" type device in it that will lock up to turn the engine over but then freewheel in the other direction once the engine starts.

To replace the part is a pretty involved procedure. First you will have to remove the starter which involves removing the outer primary and the jackshaft, and then the starter and anything that might be in the way of the starter. Once you have the starter off, you'll have to disassemble it and replace the "overrunning drive unit". The unit costs about $120.

If you plan on doing this job yourself, I would advise the purchase of a shop manual specifically for your model bike. It is far too complicated for me to give you step by step instructions via this medium. If you would like an exploded view of the starter, contact me directly at wd4ity @ Good Luck, Steve

Can an 87 fxrs be kick started?

I've never heard such a thing...

But you have to have a kick starter first and I don't recall 87's having one. Correct me if I'm wrong or if the trans has been changed out then yes you could have one. But I've never heard of Harley's starting on the second compression stroke. Plus the modern after market ignition systems used without kick start transmissions are the same ones used with custom scoots that have a modern trans with the old look of the kick starter... Although with these high compression engines, compression releases are common place because neither the starter or kick starter could crank one without...

If the battery cables were not thoroughly clean they might offer enough resistance to prevent the starter from spinning. That happened to me. I was on the road far from home. I had lights but it won't spin the starter. In fact it was so bad, the lights went off when I hit the starter.

I pulled the seat, removed the cables, scraped them clean with my jackknife, replaced the battery cables and it started right up.

Before you tear into it, double check the kill switch on the right handle grip. next to the start button there is a run switch. Be sure that is pushed down to the run position.

When you press the starter button why do you just get a click, is it a bad soleniod? or could it be a bad battery connection?

Clicking could be several things. That you have a click would indicate there is power to cause the click - probably the solenoid you hear. That is not to say your battery has sufficient power to kick the starter over.

I believe I would do a voltage test on the battery first off. Second thing I would do is measure the power on the starter side of the solenoid with the start button pressed. No power n the starter side? Replace the solenoid. You have not done something 'silly' like try to start in gear with the kick stand down (may not be a safety feature on your motorcycle) or try to start with the "kill" switch in stop position, have you? :-)

The starter may be getting power but not able to turn over because the engine will not turn over? What happens if you push the bike and pop the clutch? Will it start?

I would measure the voltage at the starter next with the starter button pressed. Is it proper?

The next think I would try is to run the starter by jumping from the battery directly to the starter. MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN NEUTRAL!!! Start?

Well now, you have voltage to the starter but it will not turn the engine over - the engine is not stuck - remove the starter and see if you can get it to run on the ground (or on your bench vice). Hopefully, you will find the starter will not run ... making this a relatively easy fix - replace the starter. If the starter runs and the "bendix" is good, this problem will require a second chapter to resolve.

Thanks for your question @

How do I hotwire my 78 shovel head?

Run a wire from the postive side of the battery to the top side of the coil. There should be two white wires on the top side of the coil and a black wire on the bottom. Once there, you can kick start the bike. If you want to use the electric starter, pop the rubber boot off starter solenoid and jump from the large top lug to the small lug in the middle to engage the starter.

Or, you can purchase an aftermarket switch and change out the switch. You need a 6-lug switch for you 78.

Breakers keep kicking off when starting 2000 Harley Sport XLHC

Battery connections have been the leading cause of what you've described. Turn the key, everythings in order, then contact! Instead of potato potato, it's just "click" and lights out. If this sounds familiar, check that battery is tight. Grounds are netorius for coming loose due to sporty vibrations.

- If the starter is turning the motor , I dont understand why u replaced the relay and the ignition....but - thats water under the bridge now .... Open the primary and check the jack shaft... put a pliers on it - pull it out and turn it 1/4 turn a few times - make sure its not binding. Take a look at the bushing on the outer primary.... may need to bevel the edges a little. Make sure the battery is charged enough to give the engine a few strong turns. Let me know what you find
