Question about 2005 Harley Davidson FXD - FXDI Dyna Super Glide
If you're talking about a Big Twin, which my thread is indicating, the problem is the "overrunning clutch" in the starter. This is the part that has a "one way bearing" type device in it that will lock up to turn the engine over but then freewheel in the other direction once the engine starts.
To replace the part is a pretty involved procedure. First you will have to remove the starter which involves removing the outer primary and the jackshaft, and then the starter and anything that might be in the way of the starter. Once you have the starter off, you'll have to disassemble it and replace the "overrunning drive unit". The unit costs about $120.
If you plan on doing this job yourself, I would advise the purchase of a shop manual specifically for your model bike. It is far too complicated for me to give you step by step instructions via this medium. If you would like an exploded view of the starter, contact me directly at wd4ity @ bellsouth.net. Good Luck, Steve
