It will be a permanent magnet alternator, there are no carbon brushes, you will need a manual for that model and start checking resistances with a multi meter.
without being able to tell you exact readings...
there will be three wires the same color coming from the stator(usually all yellow or all white) the resistance between any pair must be the same, and none of them should indicate to ground. When the bike is running any pair of these will produce about 50volts AC.
If this checks out you probably need a new regulator

I would suggest getting a new stator instead of rewiring the copper. New stators(alternators) run about $90-$100, Rectifiers(regulators) also go for about the same. But the newer parts are designed to withstand more heat and stress than the stock parts. I have a 1981 GS450 and my stator gave out during a 500 mile trip. Old stator/rectifiers were set up on a 2 phase system, power the bike and charge the battery. But what about after the battery is fully charged, what happens to the excess energy. Well it turns your stator into molten coils and the diodes in the rectifier into regular wires. The new parts incorporate the 3rd phase that recycle the energy and have a larger heatsink in the rectifier. Basically i would go with the newer parts, or you risk a repeat of the molten coils.

Can a bad alternator cause a battery to die overnight?

A bad alternator no longer charges the battery, the battery will die once it is drained. This will occur more rapidly when using equipment that runs off of the battery( lights, heater blower, windshield wipers etc.) even electronic ignition will run down a battery. Your battery just went over night the alternator may have stopped working long before. Go to an auto parts store that offers free testing to make sure it is your alternator before making repairs.
Good luck.

Hi, my alternator is not charging the battery, I have a 2009 Kia Carnival. The belt operating the alternator is not broken. My battery is completely drained (flat). When I turn ignition on, all lights

I would be getting the alternator checked out first, faulty relays are not something I have had problems with in the past, so I would go with the alternator, unless your battery is duff, don't forget a battery can be fine the last time you use the car and then it just goes dead. I would suggest you try a charged battery first and check when the engine is running that the ignition lights are all out, if not then change the alternator

can be for many reasons, not just a bad alternator.
a tech (mech) can do simple tests and find the truth.
or if DIY person? and with meters? login and see charging sysetm

What does the battery warning light mean on my 2003 Mazda Protege? Someone stole my manual out of my glove box so I can't look it up.

That battery light on your instrument panel means the battery is discharging and the alternator does not charging the battery.
Better check your engine, the alternator belt might have been cut off or already missing.
The other one will be is to check the battery terminal if it is properly connected in the battery poles.
If all these are still intact, the problem would be the alternator itself. You have to bring your car to nearest garage to check the charging( voltage ) output of that alternator something might have been broken inside it. Usually the parts inside are the rectifier diode, IC regulator, and the carbon brush.
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for asking FixYa!

Car stopped working at 5 mph in parking lot with battery light on and after cranking 2 or three times, there was no change. I have 110K miles on car... what do you think? Passat GLX 2001

your car appears to have been running off the battery instead of the alternator, the only thing the battery really does is start the car, once running the alternator runs it, check and clean all the battery connections, if you have a tester , set the voltage to DC volts and see what the voltage is, you should have 12.4 as a minimum, if you don't, Once the cables and posts have been cleaned, try jumping the car again, once its running, check the voltage again on the battery posts, you should have a minimum of 13.5 volts showing, this will tell you if your alternator is charging the battery,, sometimes dirty cables don't allow the charge to actually reach the battery, if you have that voltage,, run the car for a while so the battery charges,

How do you determine between alternator and battery? 2003 jeep liberty frequently won"t start - no radio either, but the lights and windshield wipers do. starts right up when i get it jumped...even after...

the alternator charges the battery so if that happens then your alternator is bad but if you jump it and it works for sometime then i guess ur battery is bad so change the battery
