Question about 1982 Yamaha XZ 550

3 Answers

Motorcycle idles up to 3,600 rpm warm at stops , no tension on throttle. Carbs just overhauled. Starts and idles fine cold. I use the brakes and downshift to lower the idle speed, then when I come to a stop and it seems to idle OK then it increases its idle speed to 3,600 rpms? This is not safe riding, help?

The motorcycle idled 1250 cold. I found the main idle screw and lowered to one thousand. I do not know why but the problem went away and it is a sweet ride. It is a great feeling to know that if I have a problem with anything that this websight has caring and sharing individuals that will get you through the low spots and save the day.

Did you do the work on the carbs? Do you have the equipment and expertise a pro uses to balance the carbs? If you had this done by a pro, take it back amd make them fix it.

You are right, this is dangerous and expensive. I suggest you have a Yamaka shop take a look at your motorcycle.

Visions have a prob with the yisair box screw gromots cracking and this can cause air sucking and high idle as well if the manifolds are ok. This was a problem with mine :)

How do i get a manual on how to sync the carbs on my 1987 YFZR1000? It doesn't hold idle when its cold, but once it warms up it idles at about 2500 rpm. it also pops a little bit when close the throttle...

Sounds like the idle is set too high. Around 900 rpm is good.

My 2005 Katana 600 F was idling slow at about 600 - 700 RPM so I messed with a throttle screw under the throttle lever. I got it to idle at 1000 RPM where I think it should be. But now when I turn the...

turn the cable adjuster back to its original position ie between 600-700 rpm look to the left hand side of the carbs you will see a large adjusting screw on a metal bracket whilst engine is running turn inwards towards rear wheel until between 1000 - 1500 rpm remember to warm engine first as rpm will rise if idle is set with a cold engine as the engine warms up when riding

It sounds like your bike has been sitting in storage for an extended period of time (a year or more) - and the carburetors are plugged up. If this is the case, they will need to be completely disassembled and cleaned out.
If it hasn't been sitting (and the carbs aren't plugged up) then check that all of the normal tune-up items have been performed, especially valve adjustment, oil and filters, spark plugs, etc. If this fails to produce positive results, perform a compression check on the engine. Each cylinder must be able to produce at least 140 psi of compression in order to run and idle properly.

4 cyl Engine starts and idles ok...give it throttle and it dies

I need to get a clear mental picture of what exactly is happening.

With this said, you stated that the car "runs fine" until warmed up.

Q: When you start the car when cold it idles fine?
Q: If you allow the car to idle until "fully" warmed does the car stall?
Q: As the car begins to warm up, Does the RPM fluctuate abnormally?
Q: Does the car Only stall when you press on the gas pedal or does it stall just sitting and idling in addition to pressing the gas pedal?
Q: If you can drive it while cold does the car stall during acceleration when warm or only at Stop Signs / Lights?
Q: If you wait 20min or so, can you start the car again?
Q: How many miles are on the car?

1995 Toyota Previa idles too fast when engine is warm

check to see if there is any carbon on the throttle body where the butterfly contacts it. also clean the " business end" of the idle air valve to make sure it's not being held open slightly.
