If your engine is running with the clutch out and you pull in the clutch and put the transmission in first gear, you'll hear a clunk, this is normal. The reason is that although your transmission is a constant mesh transmission it is not a synchronized transmission. I don't know of any motorcycle that has synchronizers in the transmission. When the engine is idling in neutral with the clutch out, the gears and shafts in the transmission are spinning. When you pull the clutch in, wait a second or two for the spinning transmission components to slow down or stop spinning before you kick the transmission into low gear. The hotter the transmission is, the thinner the lubricant in it and the longer you need to wait.

A clunk is normal but if the bike trys to pull forward and you have to hold the front brake to keep the bike from moving or you cannot find neutral with the engine running, you need to adjust the clutch. To adjust the clutch, find the rubber bellows in the middle of the clutch cable. Slide the bellows up and break the locknut loose. Shorten the cable as much as possible. Remove the derby cover from the left side of the primary cover. In the center of the clutch assembly, you'll see a clutch release rod adjustment. Break the locknut loose and adjust the center bolt inwards until a resistance is felt. Do not force the bolt, just until a resistance is felt. Back off on the bolt 1/2 to 1 full turn and lock the nut. Replace the derby cover and adjust the cable so that you've vote about an 1/8 inch of freeplay at the clutch lever. Lock the lock nut and replace the bellows. Good Luck, Steve

Hell.. I have a 2009 Harley street glide. Can I take the starter off instead of taking off primary cover to put on new starter clutch?

Hi Teresa, it would make my job alot easier, unfortunately you need to access the jackshaft bolt which is behind the primary cover. Good luck and have nice day.

Does the noise happen only when you pull in on the clutch (disengage the clutch), and go away when you let the clutch out (engage the clutch)?

If so, that's the clutch plates rattling until the spring load is reapplied to clamp the up.

Battery is charged, Starter Whines and is turning but bike won't fire off, 2009 Street Glide

is your engine turning over, if it is, pull your spark plugs and clean them. this happens on my 98 Heritage Softail Classic. It sounds funny but from long warm ups with choke pulled they get carbon build up and this keeps the plug from firing. If your motor is not turning over then you Bendix gear is out on your starter.

2009 street glide won't crank

Hi Carl, you may need an alarm reset, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections check negative cable at both ends. (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to on.
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.
7. Security alarm not disarming

I own a 2007 Harly Davidson Street Glide with the motor running n I am in 1st or 2nd gear I let off the gass I get a noise n when I engage the clutch the noise goes away

I'm not sure what you mean by "engage the clutch". If you mean when you pull the clutch lever, the noise goes away, I'd check the tension on my final drive belt. If the belt is loose, when the engine tries to slow the motorcycle down, the final drive belt tries to rise up off of the front belt pulley making it rub the underside of the starter to inner primary housing. When you pull the clutch lever in, you disengage the engine from the transmission and the engine breaking force is removed from the front pulley and the belt goes back down on the pulley.

On 2009 super glide does it have to be in neutral to adjust clutch

being in gear or in neutral has noe effect on the way the clutch is adjusted, or any effect on the adjustment itself.

The clunking has nothing to do with proper clutch adjustment. What is happening is normal for Harley, they have a very loud gearbox.
I can suggest a way to minimise this, especialy when the bike is cold, and you put it in first 1st for the first time. Just before you do, prime, or pump the clutch lever a few times, even pull the lever in, and hold it in for a few seconds. This usualy frees up any sticky clutch plates, and gets the clutch working properly.

I have a 2004 Ultra Classic with 26K on it as I was riding it today it developed a very loud clunking noise from the motor, any idea what has happened to it.

Could be a loose compensator nut. Holding the front brake with the bike in gear, slowly release the clutch lever to see if you can recreate the clunking noise right there. It will be on the front left of the primary cover. If you can hear it ( and you might be able to feel it too ) then that is the route I would go.

Loud Downshift

My 2004 Sporty shift pedal is "notchy" especially when cold (allow 20-30 sec. of idle after starting) to allow time for oil to wet the shift forks and gear assemblies before shifting into first driving off. Also when down shifting, I usually do NOT use engine/trans gear braking on the street to save wear and tear on the clutch and running gear...brake pads are a lot easier (and cheaper) to replace over the long haul
