Mostley the clutch adjustment should be able to be done on the clutch cable. If that does not work, then you need to be looking at taking the clutch apart. When in storage for a long time, the clutch plates can become stuck together.

HOW CAN I TELL IF I ADJUSTED MY CLUTCH CORRECTLY ON 2005 HARLEY SPORTSTER

Hi John, the correct clutch adjustment procedure is as follows: Loosen the jam nut on the clutch cable adjuster and screw the adjuster in about 1/2 " this should give you tons of free play at the clutch lever. Remove the the left footrest, the clutch inspection cover and slide the spring and lockplate off of the adjusting screw. Turn adjusting screw counterclockwise untill resistance is felt then clockwise 1/4 turn replace lockplate and spring, check for proper fluid level in primary and button back up. Back out the clutch cable adjuster untill you get 1/16" to 1/8" freeplay while pulling the clutch lever with your left hand and the clutch cable in the oppisite driction with your right hand. Tighten jam nut and your good to go. Good luck

What are the torque specs for the 4 pressure plate bolts for the clutch?

What year is it??

I am only familiar with newer models as per touring/six speed:

Install six bolts (5) (metric) to secure diaphragm spring
retainer to clutch hub. Alternately tighten bolts to 90-110
in-lbs (10.2-12.4 Nm).

If your clutch is not slipping check your shift linkage joints. Rocking the bike lets you know your tranny has gears but the shifter pawl may need adjustment

How do i adjust neutral on my harley davidson 5 speed?

Adjust your clutch cable. With the bike at room temp (cold, unridden that day) The cable adjustment will require one each 1/2 in. wrench and 1 each 9/16 in. wrench(the cable adjuster is under the rubber boot located between the front frame downtubes) to give 1.6 to 3.2 mm (1/16 to 1/8 in.) free play at the clutch lever when you pull on the cable at the clutch lever. I suggest you obtain a H-D service manual for your year & model. It will be the best $50 you ever spent

1979 Harley Davidson FXS Low Rider clutch adjustment

Hi, Michael a proper clutch adjustment for big twins starts by squirting some silicone spray or Brake Kleen into the top of the rubber boot on the clutch cable and sliding it back exposing the cable adjuster. Loosen the jam nut and turn the adjusting screw all the way in so your clutch lever has excessive slop. Remove the Derby cover, loosen the jam nut on the clutch pack adjuster screw and screw it in until light resistance is felt against the clutch rod then back the adjusting screw out 3/4 of a turn and tighten the jam nut.
Check primary fluid level and replace Derby cover unless you are running an early model "Dry Clutch" leave the Derby cover off. Go back to the clutch cable adjuster and back it out until there is 1/8" free play between the clutch lever and the bracket perch. This is correctly accomplished by pulling the clutch cable end outward with your right hand and pulling the clutch lever in with your left hand and modest pressure on both hands to eyeball the free play. Tighten cable adjuster jam nut and slide rubber boot back to its original position.
On Dry Clutch Models you need to square the pressure plate by adjusting the 3 stud nuts on the outside of the pressure plate so that when the clutch lever is pulled in the pressure plate shoots "STRAIGHT" out and disengages evenly.
On Sportster models, the procedure is the same except the clutch cable adjuster screws directly into the primary cover with a jam nut. How do i change my clutch and plates

Harley changed their clutch in 1998 and I don't think they've changed it since. To change the plates in your clutch:

First, disconnect your battery, Remove the floorboard on the primary side and drain the oil out of the primary. Remove the outer primary cover. Remove the six screws in the clutch assembly and remove the clutch plates and steel plates. Soak your new clutch plates in oil overnight. Replace the old parts with the new parts in the exact same order. Rinstall the bolts using Loctite 242 (medium strength blue) and torque the bolts to about 20 foot pounds. Adjust the clutch according to factory specs and reinstall the outer primary cover. Add oil and reconnect the battery. Put the floor board back on and you're ready to ride.

Ride Safe.
Steve
