When You Turn The Switch To The On Position. The Oil Light Should Be On This Basicly Shows That Bulb Is Good. Having oil pressure problems

The sending unit is a variable resistor. When the oil pressure is normal only a small amount of voltage goes to ground through the sending unit. As the oil pressure goes down, more voltage is shunted to ground reducing the sending unit voltage and causing the gauge to indicate a lower pressure. If the oil pressure falls very low or disappears the sending unit shunts all the voltage to ground which causes the dash indicator to show no oil pressure.
Now if the wire to the sending unit gets nicked, melted or cut and finds a short circuit to ground, or gets disconnected in a junction point between the gauge and the sending unit, you will get the same no oil pressure indication from the gauge.
Check you wiring for a short to ground or an open connection.

1981 kawasaki 440LTD. Engine oil light stays on. Oil pump good, Sending unit appears OK. Bike runs strong, can't find the problem. Need help

Well if your oil light is staying lit, but your oil pressure is good and you cant find any problems with the actual oiling of the bike, then this sounds basically like either A.Your sending unit is bad or B. You have a ground in your oil sending unit circuit somewhere. You could always replace the sending unit first to save time shooting the wiring harness.if you replace the unit and the light is still on, then you have a wire touching in the circuit between the sending unit and the warning light. I have an 81 KZ750 and my oil sending unit only has one wire going from it to the warning light and the color of it is Blue with a Red Stripe.I am not sure if yours has the same wiring colors though.

do you mean the sump plug ??? to let the oil out when you give it a oil change??...if so its on the sump on the bottom of the engine...

Oil Pressure light stays on. Oil reservoir is full,oil level light goes out and dipstick shows full oil. What could cause this?

It occurred to me that you may find it by unplugging wires on the few items under the hood which may appear they could be the oil pressure sending unit.

The light should go out when the wire is unplugged, and if it does it is bad. That's your continuity test.

If you unplug the oil pressure sending unit and the light does not go out, the cause of the oil light staying on is something other than the oil pressure sending unit.

RE pete cass posting: I believe that if the sensor is diconnnected, the oil pressure light will not light (at least because of the oil pressure sensor switch being disconnected) -- the symptom here is the light won't go off. The switch is closed with oil pressure below 10-15 PSI and open above that oil pressure -- this is a normally closed switch.

The oil pressure sending unit is located behind the oil filter.
