Question about 2002 Harley Davidson FXST Softail Standard

1 Answer

Engine light comes on periodically while riding. I can stop and shut the engine off and it seems to reset it. Also, my speedometer needle has stopped working, although I still have power to the speedometer and the odometer works fine.

Hi Josh_brown, always check your instrument fuse before performing the next procedure, try cleaning your speed sensor located on top of the transmissions right side between the top cover and the chrome starter end cap on Twin Cams and on top of the engine case between the rear cylinder and the starter motor for Sportsters. Remove the the bolt that secures the sensor and pull it out of the transmission. Inspect sensor for obvious damage and repace if necessary. If sensor has no damage then wipe clean any obvious contamination like micro fiberous material with a clean rag and reinstall, torque bolt to 8 ft lbs. Next check the connector to the speedometer for correded, broken or loose pins/sockets. Good luck and have nice day.

First, check for any error codes:

The speedometer is capable of displaying & clearing speedometer , tachometer TSM/TSSM , HFSM , ECM , ABS Diagnostic Trouble Codes also known as DTC's.

1 - Turn the ignition switch to off & run/stop switch is to run .
2 - Push odometer reset button in & HOLD .
3 - Turn the ignition switch on and then release odometer reset button . The background lighting should illuminate & the speedometer needle should sweep it's full range & indicator lamps ( battery , security , low fuel , check engine and cruise ) should illuminate . The word "DIAG" should then appear .
4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPtb" with the first P flashing .
5 - Each letter represents a area of the diagnostics module . The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check . To move from one letter to the next you must push the odometer reset button one time . ( from P to S to SP to t to b and back to P , ect ect )
P = ECM
S = TSM/TSSM/HFSM
SP = speedometer
t = tachometer
b = ABS codes
6 - To get the DTC code in a area of diagnostics you should PUSH & HOLD the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and the release . Beings the "Check Engine Light" goes off and on, there SHOULD be one or more error codes stored in the system.
Have you tried pulling any error codes?

No horn. no indictor, no criuise control all fuses seem ok

Pull the error codes.

To retrieve fault codes:

With engine run/stop switch in the RUN position, hold odometer reset button while turning ignition switch to ON position.

Speedometer back lights wil come on, needle swings to top speed position, indicator lights will come on.

Release reset button.
"diag" should display in odometer.
Push and release odometer reset button. The letter "P" will flash (ECM/ICM info obtainable).
Record any error codes. If none are present, "NONE" will scroll across screen.

Press and hole reset button for more than 5 seconds to go to next mode ("S" = TSM/TSSM/HFSM mode).

When done with all modes, switch off ignition.

Either look up codes in manual, or repost here.

2000 FXD super glide..47k miles..riding at highway speed my battery got super hot,tach stopped,speedometer stopped and then engine stopped running.i can not touch battery box without burning my self.s

Check the regulator. It sounds as if it has packed in, when the engine is at idle the alternator output is low, but when revved it will be higher, the regulator controls the top end of the voltage range. Also check the battery connections are tight and free from corrosion.

Check engine light acting up

The first thing I would check is the voltage output from the charging system. If the regulator isn’t regulating, the voltage will keep climbing as the engine speed increases. The electronics in the speedometer don’t work well at these high voltages. This would also explain the bright marker lamps. You should be able to see this with a simple voltmeter across the battery terminals.
