I have a 2001 yamaha v star 1100 classic and the starter isnt engaging with flywheel. I put new starter in but still just spinning, not engaging. what should I do next?

Hi, Timothy your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Starter stays engaged

It sounds like you may have a bad "Starter Clutch." This is not cheap to replace, so I hope I'm wrong. B)

I have a Yamaha v star 1100 classic, I can hear the starter turning, but not catching on and starting, it's like it's not catching into the fly wheel or something. It started up fine the...

failed starter clutch...this is a one way centrifugal coupling within the motor that engages with the starter then disconnects when the motor fires. When these fail...the starter clutch will no longer engage with the engine properly.

Starter won't engage. It just spins.

2002 v star 1100classic starter turns gears turn but engine don,t even try to turn over

Which gears still turn? I've seen cases where at around 15k to 20k the starter motor clutch goes out. Starter turns, transmission gears will still turn. But starter obviously not engaging the motor. Good luck
