1976 Sportster. Why does the battery lose its charge?

Hi Johnny,

No, it would not be an open circuit, as that would cause nothing. Most likely a diode issue.

You did not mention if the bike drains when running, or sitting...Kind of a big thing....

IF not running and the battery drains, isolate the battery by disconnecting all negative cables at the battery. If the problem resolves, the regulator is suspect. It has the diodes that fail.

IF the battery drains while running, look into the charging system. There is a lot of trouble with the plug, where the charging system comes through the engine block. they overheat and fail to function. Not something you can always see, until the plug is pulled out.

If this plug is damaged, it is fairly major to switch out the stator. I have successfully made a soldered connection in this area and filled again with black silicone.

Johnny, there are a ton of other areas that can be suspect, but much more rare for your condition, as stated.

Hi Anonymous, running hot and glowing pipes is almost always caused by retarded timing. Battery not charging could be voltage regulator and or alternator. Quite a mess, for more info please visit website below and good luck.

HERE'S THE ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEM:

I believe that the main culprit is your battery itself - its capacity to hold and supply power to your cellphone. These are some of the causes why cellphone battery life are shortened:

1. Bluetooth - it quickly drains battery life
2. Programs running in the background
3. Wi-fi and Data Connections
4. Backlit Screens

Nokia x3 batteries have only 11 hours life when used for calls. So, if in case your battery does not work well, do not think twice to buy a new one. Your battery might have been used up or burn out. Do waste your time bringing charger and charging it always whenever you have calls. Try to think.

I love answering your question. Thanks...

You have a voltage drain on your bike while the key is off that is why the tender wont full charge the battery. If you have any electrical accessories such as an alarm try disconnecting them they may be draining your battery while sitting. If no accessories then you have a short somewhere in the harness causing the drain.

Fuel constantly leaks out of the overflow(?) tubes on bottom of carburetors Also headilght drains battery dead (when running!)

hello
sounds like two problems. one a possible charging system failure and a carb issue. the carb issue you are haveing is what is a result of a float valve sticking. they can stick or hang open for a couple reasons, either dirt getting into the fuel line, or buildup causeing the vavle to become sticky and not function as well, or a worn float valves wont seal as well. when the float valves dont function and regulate the fuel, the excess goes out the overflow. to correct this the carbs need removed and the float valves inspected for which fault you are encountering.
the headlight drain is most likely caused from a no charge condition. with the bike running above idle. you should be able to get a 13-15volt chargeing voltage while testing at the battery terminals. 90% of the time this is caused from a faulty rectifier/regulator.
