If the bike has been sitting for a while the clutch plates can stick together, you will still feel spring tension from the pressure plate. two ways to free it up.
with the engine stopped click it up into top gear, put the front wheel against a wall, pull in the clutch, and push on the kick start, or push start it in gear, pull in the clutch and vary the throttle .
Change the oil after the ride with good motorcycle engine oil.

125cc Kawasaki dirt bike, cranks on first kick, idles but won't run in any gear, doesn't die out but doesn't seem to engage gear, possible problems?

Does it jerk forward when you put it into gear and die? Or you put it into gear and the bike doesn't move when you let the clutch out? Badly adjusted clutch in both cases. Worst case, you need new clutch plates and springs.

I have a 07XL1200low it won't shift into 2nd gear unless I shift at a high rpm from first Or I shift at a low rpm quick from first to second or I down shift into second it pops out when I give it gas

Hi Jamie, not good, could be and extremely misajusted or worn out clutch or you have a gear engagement problem probably caused by a bent or worn shifting fork, also sometimes shifter pawl and cam follower springs don't want to play any more. Check your primary fluid level and proper clutch adjustment. If you are comfortable with your clutch and oil level you might want to take it to your local dealer or reputable shop and have them pull the transmission and do an estimate. Has the bike ever been dropped or laid down on the left side a popular cause for shifting problems. Good luck

What is a detent on a shifter

A detent is a notch or notches in a part used to keep a shifter (in this case) at a certain position. Be that an automatic or stick-shift. You can imply that the shift pattern on a stick-shift has detents for each gear as the shift lever locks and slides in and out of each position for that gear to work when the clutch is released. The detents on an automatic can resemble "steps" which engage a different gear or series of gears(drive) when a certain step is locked into position by a pressure bar or pressure lever.

Sometimes the pressure bar or pressure lever is spring loaded and your hand works against that tension to select a gear or function(drive). There may be an adjustment for the spring tension, or the spring is too weak and the shift assembly must be replaced.

With electronic shift solenoids, some of the shift assembly is different than with the old-style mechanical shifter. The action may be fly by wire with electronic shifts.

I do not know what you have, so there may be differences.

Clutch not engaging? If you have the bike in gear and engine not running...release the clutch you can still roll the bike? Can you feel proper tension on the clutch lever?

Started bike, pulled clutch lever, put bike in 1st gear, let out on clutch and nothing happened. clutch lever moves freely with no tension at all. when i put the kickstand down it shuts off like its...

The clutch lever should have some tension, so could be a problem with the hydraulic actuator stuck, or a failure of the clutch. try bleeding the clutch, or pull the clutch cover off and see if the pressure plate moves

When hooking my new vrod battery up i can hear the starter spinning when i try to attach the ground...what am i doing wrong

When you discovered your battery was kaput, you were probably trying to start your bike at the time. I have seen on rare occasions that when this happens, the starter solenoid gets "stuck" in the "engaged" positon. Try rocking your bike backwards and forwards a few times with the transmission in high gear. Rock the bike while shifting the tranny until you get it into high gear. The with the clutch out, rock the bike and turn the engine over a few times. Shift the bike back down to neutral and try to connect the battery. Rocking the bike while in gear rotates the outer clutch drum. If the starter jack shaft is still engaged with the ring gear on the outer clutch drum, rocking the bike a bit will turn the drum allowing the spring in the starter to pull the jack shaft and starter gear back out of engagement. I hope this helps.

Unable to select lower gears on downshift

The bike has a bent shift fork or two. This is a MAJOR repair and best done by a knowing mechanic.
The motor comes out of the bike then turned upside down for removal of the bottom case. The clutch, shift shaft, flywheel, electrics, gears and gear shafts gotta come out so you can get to the bad fork. There's much more but the idea is that you are better off having the shop do the repair unless you have experience, are extremely mechanically inclined, and have the tools. The bad news is that a shop is going to charge around $1200 to $1500 for the repair. Some shop mechanics also repair bikes at home. If you find one, you can save $200 to $400 or so. Sorry to be the one to give you the bad news. The diagram below shows how a shift fork moves a slider gear left and right to engage different gears. A bent fork will not fully engage a gear.

A “very helpful” rating on this answer? Thanks!

Clutch pulling

Your clutch is not fully disengaging.Adjust the cable at the lever until you have plenty of free play. Then adjust the cable at the motor until you have full engagement then readjust lever to 3/8 in play.Fine tune at the motor. It may take a few trys but you can get it.
