Question about 1980 Suzuki Gs 550 L
I got this bike about a year ago and have been having problems ever since trying to get it to start. sometimes it will start fine and run fine but others it wont. it also has a tendancy to just shut off as soon as you take the choke off once i do get it started even if it has been running for 10 minutes. i had it away for the winter and when i got it out about a month ago it stared right away but it was shutting off right away like i explained before. currently it wont start at all. another problem was that if i started it every day it was fine but if i could get it to start and then left it alone for a few days it would either not start at all or would take 10 min to start. also on the times it does run it also has some problems. some times it has small backfires and spitting, but other times it runs fun. also sometimes the throttle is a little bit sticky and others its not. currently i cant get it to start at all and i have been trying for about 2 weeks. a friend that also had this bike said that he had a problem with gas getting to the carbs and another said that he had holes in his petcock and it was sucking in air through there instead of the carbs. although i have not thuroughly checked to see if ether of those were the problem i dont think they are. can anyone else tell me some other possible issues and the solutions to them. the spark plugs are also fairly new as is the battery. thanks.
I just got my first bike and its an 82 gs550 i was having the same prob. with getting it running so i took off the petcock took it apart cleaned it real good with carb cleaner an put it back together and put it back on the tank and been riding it ever since hope this helps and ride safe and keep it rubber side down lol

Well your friend's solution can be a starting step to try before doing anything else. Good luck.

There is a motorcycle junkyard in Stanton Pa and a used part dealer in Toledo Ohio called Cycleman that deals in good reusable parts
