Question about 2008 KTM 450 SX-F

Starting problem KTM SXf 450 2008 model

Hello I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have this problem with my 450 SXf. The motor turns over and will not start. There is plenty of spark and the plug is wet but it does turn over without anything in the motor sounding like it is really damaged and I did not see a lot of metal flakes in the oil when changed so I am hoping that the valves are ok and not bent and that the piston is ok.

I have read reports it could be the decompressor or the timing is out but am not 100% sure on how to check it. The oil was low when I bought the bike and have read that the cam tensioner may have released slightly and the cam slipped a tooth or two. Would you recommend taking it to my KTM dealership to sort ou the problem and does anybody know where I can find a workshop manual for my bike on the net?

Many thanks to anyone out there that can help me out!

Of course I recommend taking it to a dealership. They go through training sessions every few months and guarantee their work. At dealerships you pay good money, but you get great work. Have you tried youtube to see if anyone has posted videos? It is a good place to get ideas, but be cautious and try stuff at your own risk.

Rent a compression tester from autozone and check compression if compression is down pour one cap of oil into cylinder through spark plug hole and check again. if ring or piston is bad or cylinder is marred then compression will go up with oil in cylinder if up top it wont change. ne more questions email customsouth676@yahoo.com will walk ya through it if need be.

Why is my exhaust turning red and why is it hard to crank? Its an electric start.

You are running too hot ... too much fuel and or timing is off. Have you or anyone messed with the carb(s)?

Have a pro take a look at this problem for you.

KTM 450 blown head gasket?

Hey Anon, Run a compression check..screw the compression gauge into the head until the o-ring seats..( a coat of oil on the o-ring helps) hold the throttle wide open and kick it over about 6-8 times HARD.. you should get at least 120psi..if it is lower than 110psi you need to find out why...
if you don't have the tools/knowledge/experience .. .. take it to a qualified pro...
