Have you taken the cyl valve cover off?
Ensure all your spark plugs are off.
To find TDC cyl 1, turn your crankshaft until a big red dot on side of block line up with small red dot on crankshaft and you can see or feel the top of piston 1 through spark plug hole. Then you can set your timmng chain in.

V6 fto changed timing belt lined all marks but now back firing

Sounds like the dist. could be half a tooth off. You need to bring up #1 piston to top dead center and verify the rotor in the cap is pointing to #1 in the firing order.

How to get number 1 cylinder top dead center when motor is not running on a gmc 4.3 1991

With truck off, you can turn the crankshaft nut from bottom of engine. To bring to top dead center. Remove #1 plug and insert a straw or similar into plug hole on top of piston. When the piston just starts to go back down from all the way up, that's top dead center, The number one cylinder in the 4.3 V-6 is the front wire on the driver-side of the engine. God-Bless!

bring #1 piston to top dead center(TDC). pull #1 spark plug to sit on top of the #1 piston by inserting long screwdriver into the hole. then check the cam to the other end of the motor. there slots on both cams that should be lined up together so that can lay the bar across the end of the head to be able to insert into the hole.
cam and crankshaft are lined up now to replace timing belt.
and Ztech motors are no real timing marks.

94 yota pickup V6. Timing belt failed, replaced it, now it's running rough and lacks power. Ideas?

The engine is a free running type so bent valves should not be the problem. Recheck the timing marks on the camshafts and crankshaft. If you are one timing belt tooth off, the engine could run but run rough. With the number 1 cylinder piston at top dead center, the camshaft marks should be lined up with their "TDC" marks and the crankshaft mark should be at 0 deg.

If the distributor was removed during the belt replacement, make sure it is in time with the crankshaft timing mark. When the No. 1 cylinder piston is at top dead center, the crankshaft timing mark should be on 0 deg. and the distributor rotor should be pointing to the number 1 terminal on the distributor cap at the same time.

How to set a timing belt

Factory timing for all 90-93 normally aspirated Celicas (ST, GT, and GT-S) is 10º before top dead center (BTDC). This means when the crankshaft angle of the number one cylinder reaches 10º, the spark plug will fire. It fires before it reaches top dead center (TDC) because the flame front takes time to fully combust and push the piston downward. this site might help u .http://www.toyotacelicaonline.com/timing.htm
