How do I get the screws out of the valve cover heads?

I want to change a scratched valve cover head- but can't figure out how to remove the screws and rubber seals?
I want to use them on the new one- help?

Leak out the head vent is usually caused by fine scratches on head valve (white plastic part in the head) and wear/ scratches on the surface where large oring of the headvalve makes contact with aluminum. Use fine sandpaper to remove scratches on aluminum head and replace the headvalve (white plastic part in the head). If the head has deep wear groove, replace head or sand and use oversize oring (or use Teflon tape under oring). Good luck

Model 331877 briggs fuel pump leaks oil out vent


I just got done repairing the very same engine with the same syptoms that you mentioned. I had considerable oil coming out of the fuel pump breather hole (copper colored mesh). The source of the problem: a blown head gasket. This will cause the piston, in the compression cycle, to pressurize the crankcase through the head gasket leak into the valve lifter chamber and push oil out the vacuum tube (bottom hose) leading to the fuel filter . To fix, you will need to first disassemble the cylinder head from the engine. To do that you first need to disconnect the three hoses to the fuel pump. Remove the cover to the air filter, remove the air filter and the screw in the bottom of the filter housing. Remove the four bolts attaching the plastic flywheel cover and remove the cover., remove the cylinder head (8 bolts)and check the head gasket to confirm it is blown (you will probably see some dark brown or black discoloration of the head gasket between the cylinder and valve lifter chamber. Carefully remove all old head gasket material from the block and head surfaces and clean the head bolts. If either your cylinder head or block surface looks ugly, you may need to get them resurfaced (flatness tolerance is very small ) Buy a valve gasket set (contains the head gasket and other needed parts)
Remove the valve rocker arm cover (4 bolts) from the head. Mark the exhaust and intake lifter rods (they are different) Clean the combustion chamber. If your engine has many hours on it, you will want to remove the valves and check the valve rims and seats for wear or pitting. You may want to hand lap the valves to insure they are seating perfectly.
I coated my head bolts with an anti-sieze valve lube compound. The B&S service manual calls for this. Reassemble head and torque head bolts to 220 in.-lbs. (4 stages) Do very accurately. Compress valve springs, install push rods and set clearances between rocker arm and end of valve stem. Turn flywheel to move piston so that both valves are closed before setting clearances. install a new fuel pump on the plastic flywheel housing. I removed the breather from the top of the engine (two small screws) and checked the reed and oil drain hole, and resealed the breather cover (you will need to pull the flywheel to get to one of the breather screws. I used a gray high-temp rtv liquid gasket compound to reseal the rocker arm cover and breather body. Reassemble all parts and screws and use small torques as listed in Briggs Service manual. I put in a new spark plug, changed the oil and filter, and breather tube, and o-ring at the bottom of my oil filler tube. That should do it

Its the spill valve that stuck under the micro swith, this is quite easy to fix, to take the cover off there are 3 square plastic tabs under the machine, pull these out about 1/2 in that releases the tabs on the case's edge press the case inwards where the tabs were & take cover off, at the hose end the black cover is held by 4 torx screws, take that off and remove the detergent holder, then take the 2 torx screws that hold the micro switch out, pull that away forwards & sideways, take the 4 torx screws off the cylinder head cover & take
the spill valve out, this is probably stuck so take care not to damage it as you try to pull it out, clean the valve & most important clear the bore in the cylinder head, its probably built up a white powderlike aluminium oxide, be careful not to scratch the bore, lubricate the spill-valve & it should now push back with not much resistance, now put it all back together, you could test to see if its workind OK before you fit the top cover, (if it doesn't you haven't cleaned the spill-valve & bore properly)

I have a loud ticking under my valve cover. 97 ford escort. I think its a loose valve but is it some thing i can fix. I know a little about cars. but not an expert


not a valve, but a lifter. I will paste procedure below. You judge if you can do it or not. Recommend you replace them all while you're in there. If you let this go, the lifter will wear out the camshaft. Lifters are $22 each, and you have 8 of them. You will also need a new valve cover gasket.

SOHC engine
See Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9
  1. Disconnect the engine air cleaner-to-valve cover hose from the cover by compressing the hose clamp with pliers and sliding the clamp back, then separate the hose from the cover.
  2. Remove the spark plug wire separators from the valve cover and set the wire assemblies aside.
  3. Unfasten the three valve cover retaining bolts.
  4. Remove the valve cover and gasket from the cylinder head.
WARNING Do not use any abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material. Use a plastic manual gasket scraper to remove the gasket residue. Be careful not to scratch or gouge the aluminum sealing surfaces when cleaning them.
  1. Remove the old gasket material from the cylinder head and valve cover mating surfaces.

If removing more than one valve lifter (tappet), mark the lifters and their locations as they must be installed in their original bores.

  1. Remove the rocker arm(s).
  2. Unfasten the lifter guide plate retainer.
  3. Remove the guide plate and the lifter.


To install:
  1. The oil feed hole in the lifter must face away from the oil feed hole in the cylinder head.
  2. Lubricate the lifter(s) with clean 5W-30 engine oil and install them in their original bores.

Make sure the lifter guide plate retainer tabs are towards the rear of the cylinder head, and the lifter guide plate tabs are towards the front of the cylinder head.
  1. Install the lifter guide plate and tighten the retainer.
  2. Install the rocker arms.
Do not use any sealer with a silicone type gasket.
  1. Install a new gasket and the valve cover.
  2. Install and tighten the valve cover retainers to 71-97 inch lbs. (8-11.5 Nm).
  3. Attach the spark plug wire separators to the cylinder head.
  4. Connect the engine air cleaner-to-valve cover hose and engage the hose clamp

Valve cover is leaking oil on my 2000 1.9 TDI Passat. Have changed the gasket but still leaking badly. Have been told to change whole cover but VW want £120,00 Any ideas?


will try to help.if it's only the valve cover leaking,i'm guessing they sold you the rubber one that says ne rtv sealant needed. take your back off, try not to break the rubber seal when removing!clean the top of head where gasket goes. clean the valve cover really good!clean the grooves out that the gasket slides into. buy some blue trv glue, apply a thin coat to top of head, let it setup while you apply another thin coat to valve cover, let set 10mins. apply gasket to valve cover making sure to push the gasket into the grooves on valve cover. don't worry about neatness. let the valve cover set on a hard surface with the gasket against the hard flat surface[such as a garage floor,or clean driveway] after10 more minutes install the valve cover,make sure and take your time. place valve cover onto motor,than hand start each bolt to insure thay are going into the prope bolt holes. after you have each bolt hand started, start at center of valve cover snugging the bolts down to motor. do not crank down or apply excessive force when tightening those bolts. you should see some of that blue rtv glue coming out around the valve cover when applying torque to the valve cover bolts. only secure them snug at first. let car set for 15mins. start car and look for leaks around the cover, do not over tighten those bolts but you may need to look for a leak, go to bolt closest to leak and turn it 1/4 at a time until leak stops. but if you do this step by step, you'll not have a leak issue. you may have pinched the gasket when you replaced it. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

There is a tapping noise in the motor but its not knocking I think its a lifter it hasent lost any power and its really not getting worse I would like to know what the spec is for tighing down the lifter...


Depends on which engine you have. If you have


ADJUSTMENT Although it is sometimes possible to reuse an old cylinder head cover gasket, in most cases it makes more sense to purchase a new one before beginning the procedure. Some vehicles may require the use of silicone sealant either with or without a new cover gasket. For more details, please refer to the cylinder head cover procedures in Engine & Engine Overhaul of this repair guide and refer to the gasket manufacturer's instructions.

Z24i Engine
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
For the intake valves: 1-4-5-8 valve clearance is 0.012 in. (0.30mm). For the exhaust valves: 2-3-6-7 valve clearance is 0.012 in. (0.30mm). The pivot locknut torque specification is 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).

  1. The valves must be adjusted with the engine warm, so start the truck and run the engine until the needle on the temperature gauge reaches the middle setting. After the engine is warm, shut it off.
  2. Note the location of any wires and hoses which may interfere with cylinder head cover removal, disconnect them and move them to one side. Remove the bolts holding the cylinder head cover in place and remove the cover. Remember, the engine will be hot, so be careful!

  1. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks indicate that the No. 1 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke. If you're not sure of which stroke you're on, remove the No. 1 spark plug and hold your thumb over the hole. Pressure will be felt as the piston starts up on the compression stroke.
  2. Refer to the accompanying illustration (upper part), then check valves (1), (2), (4) and (6) using a flat bladed feeler gauge. The feeler gauge should pass between the valve stem end and the rocker arm screw with a very slight drag. Insert the feeler gauge straight, not at an angle.
  3. If the clearance is not within the specified value, loosen the rocker arm lock nut and turn the rocker arm screw to obtain the proper clearance. After correct clearance is obtained, tighten the locknut.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks indicate that the No. 4 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke. If you're not sure of which stroke you're on, remove the No. 4 spark plug and hold your thumb over the hole. Pressure will be felt as the piston starts up on the compression stroke.
  5. See the illustration (lower part), then check valves (3), (5), (7) and (8). Check and adjust valve clearance as necessary.
  6. Install the cylinder head cover gasket, the cover itself and any wires or hoses which were removed. Check the engine oil level.

KA24E, VG30i and VG30E Engines
See Figures 4 and 5
These models utilize hydraulic valve lifters. Periodic adjustment is neither necessary or possible. There is however a bleed down procedure that is necessary when the valve train has been disassembled.
HYDRAULIC LIFTER BLEED DOWN
  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  2. Check the lifters for proper operation by pushing hard on each lifter with fingertip pressure.
  3. If the valve lifter moves more than 0.04 in. (1mm), air may be inside it. Make sure the rocker arm is not on the cam lobe when making this check.
  4. Install the cylinder head cover.
  5. If there was air in the lifters, bleed the air by running the engine at 1000 rpm for 10 minutes.

How to remove valve cover to replace valve cover gasket


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1C-LTC and 2CL-TC Engines
(see Figures 1 and 2)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove and label all electrical wiring, connectors and vacuum hoses necessary to gain removal clearance.

  1. Disconnect the PCV hose.
  2. Remove the six nuts and seal washers from the cylinder head cover. Loosen them in a crisscross pattern.
  3. Remove the cylinder head cover and the cover gasket from the cylinder head. Discard the gasket and replace with a new one.

To install:
  1. With a wire brush or gasket scraper, remove all the old gasket material from the cylinder head and the cylinder head cover gasket surfaces.
  2. When the cylinder head surfaces are free and clean, apply beads of sealant to the cylinder head in the locations shown in the accompanying illustration.

  1. Install the new gasket in the cover. Make sure that the gasket seats evenly.
  2. Place the cover with the gasket onto the cylinder head.
  3. Install the six nuts and seal washers. Tighten the nuts to 65 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4. Connect the PCV hose. Connect all removed vacuum hoses, connectors and electrical wiring. Connect the negative battery cable.
  5. Start the engine and inspect for oil leaks. Repair any leaks as necessary.

Head Gasket?? Valve cover Gasket???


most likely it is the valve cover gasket. it covers the valve train where there is alot of oil to lube the top of the motor. if the head gasket was leaking it may have more signs of running poorly. also having coolant leaks also. so i will have to say valve cover gasket. now usally you may have a oil burning smell with it depending on the area of the lek but not always.

the valve cover can easily be seen when the hood is open. it is right on the top and where it meets the clyinder head is where the gasket is and the leak can be seen.

Dear svoegele2,
Your machine is still good. You have to remove the 4 screws that are holding the head unit. The head unit consists of 2 parts. The outer part has Intake of water and delivery of water under pressure. It has an injector. It also has the chemical inlet attachment. This Detergent inlet valve can be replaced by a new one. (The bottom part of the head has the suction and delivery valves.)
Now this unit of 2 heads is held down with a steel cover. First release the holding down bolts( they could be allen screws or Torx Screws). If the inlet valve for the chemical is still good and t is turned 90 dgrees, twist it slowly to be alligned with the slot in the metal cover. But if this is broken, just remove the metal head and then remove by twisting,..the detergent inlet..(which is also a non return valve).
Carfull if you seperate the top half of the head from the bottom head...because underneath there is a smal spring and a small valve. Do not lose these.
Now if the machine has no pressure..change the bottom half of the head. If the machine is switching on and off...change the upper half f the head. Do not forget that small spring between the 2 heads If where the inlet for detergent in the head is cracked..this top head must be renewed for this reason also.
If all is OK...but only the inlet..where the detergent is broken....remove slowly the detergent inlet, by twisting a little,....and replace by a new one. First see that you have the NEW inlet of detergent before doing anything . Because if you do not find to buy a new on....and there is no damage to the upper head...you can continue using the machine,...but with out having detergent. It is better using it without detergent than throwing the machine away. One final hint. Try the machine with the plastic cover removed,..so to see if there are any leaks or cracks in the head unit.(wear safety gogles). If only the inlet for detergent is broken and no water is escaping from it or the head,...buy a new inlet detergent valve. If you do without detergent and you cannot find to buy a detergent inlet valve,...just close the machine and use it without detergent. When myself I service such machines...I change the whole head unit and detergent valve. Then the machine will be as good as new. And the spares are not that expensive. Better than buying another machine.

I need to replace the valve cover gasket on my voltswagon jetta


you probably mean the valve head gasket.

In this case this is serious work and you should contact a local VW dealership or mechanic and have them do this work for you to insure a job well done. If you simply mean your Valve cover, then this is no big deal and can be done by taking out the 4 screws found at the corners of the valve cover and then simply lifting the cover free and replacing it with a new one/tightening the screws back down.
