Question about Harley Davidson FXSTD Softail Duece Motorcycles

2 Answers

Each time I decelerate on my 2001 Harley softail Deuce I hear a very audible "chirp" coming from the lower engine area. I'm guessing it's my clutch. It started shortly after I installed a "95" kit which increased the torque and hp. Do I need to replace the clutch pack... or what ?? PS. It's definitely NOT the drive belt.

    Thanks..... but,

I've put a good 3500 miles on my bike since the 95 kit install and if anything, the "chirping" is more pronounced. Why on earth would the noise go away ??

  • taaylormade Apr 25, 2010

Thanks but I guess I was looking for a more definitive answer. I'm still a bit confused on ftw1952's comment: "the noise should wear away on its own within 1000 miles". And, dj_relly999 commented that the clutch should be upgraded when any engine mods result in increased hp & torque. The dealer never mentioned a clutch upgrade when I had the upgrade work done. Anyway, I'll go ahead and replace the clutch pack and hope for the best.

The chirpping noise is indeed the clutch. The noise should wear away on its own within 1000 miles if you can bear the chirpping

Hi! Just a tip. On all performance parts upgrade, be it a motorcycle or automobile. Once you upgrade your torque and horsepower you will need to upgrade your clutch so that it can perform well. Hope this shed some light. Have a good one!

Need a wiring diagram for 2001 harley davidson softail deuce

Spend the $70 for an HD repair manual, money well spent and it has the diagram. Not allowed to post their copyrighted materiel or that of the Cylmer manual that I have. I wish I spent the extra $30 because I am about to buy the HD one anyway.
They have the best detail on the parts and repair methods. Better pictures and well worth the extra...

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to Ignition
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.

Hi Anonymous, on the right side cover of the transmission where the clutch cable screws into there is a cap that takes a 3/8" allen key. This is your transmission dip stick. Good luck

2003 Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce FXSTDI My starter spins over and clicks , but want start my 2003 Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce FXSTDI HAS A NRW BATTERY HELP PLEASE!!!

If your starter is spinning but the engine is not turning over, you over running clutch or Bendix is bad. On the Nippondenso style starter on the late bikes, this starter clutch is inside of the starter. You must pull the starter off and disassemble it to repair the starter. If you can do the job yourself, you can repair the starter and save some money. If you're going to have to pay a mechanic to do the work, simply replace the starter. Any money saved by repairing the starter in this case would be quickly depleted in labor cost.

Good Luck

I just bought a used 2009 Heritage Classic. I currently have a 2004 Deuce. The Deuce has V&H pipes and the Heritage has some slip on pipes. I hear a whirling sound out of the Heritage and not out...

It could be the transmission that you're hearing. Harley changed the way they cut the gears in the '06 models I think. I'm not really sure because the Twin Cam powered bikes are not something I work on. I work on the older bikes. If you're concerned about the noise, take it to a dealer and let a mechanic ride it or if you have a friend that has a bike later than '06, swap bikes for a ride and see what you hear.

Good Luck

How to lower stock shocks on my 2001 harley davidson deuce?

(Rear) The HD "Softail" (R) system has some adjustment to preset the load level of the shocks (not much). You will need to have a "pre-load" wrench to make adjustments to the system. Your custom option ($$$) would be to install an aftermarket kit that can both lower the bike, and some provide adjust-ability via an on-board air compressor. Both "Legend," and "Progressive" make such kits, but they are costly and are best installed professionally. (Front) There are lowering kits which replace fork springs and reset the front stance of a bike, but these may also affect handling and safety so be careful. Actually lowering bikes is an art, since ground clearance is changed and you might encounter cornering issues.

Want to no what all has to come out to change trans 2003 deuce

To change the transmission you will have to disconnect the battery then remove the outer primary cover, starter, clutch, primary chain tensioner, stator, (clutch, stator and primary chain come out as a set) inner primary cover, exhaust, clutch cable and then transmission. Sounds like a big job but if you are mechanically inclined, have the tools and have a weekend to yourself it is reasonably easy.
