Just stopped at another shop and talked with a mechanic and he said the crank is bad. Out of balance, that the early twin 88 were known for weak cranks or soft cranks i guess. whats do ya think about that? like i said its a 2002 and i have 55,000 miles on it. Noticed this vibration a couple years ago in the foot boards. Reminded me of when your hand or foot would fall asleep and you get all the tingles that is how your foot would feel. Seems to be getting worse over the past couple of years. runs good! but shakes hard when idiling.

2002 classic, carbarated. been having a vibration problem since about 07. u could feel it in the foot boards.. i did install a makuni carb back in 04'. now the bike shakes bad in the handle bars. this is only when i idle, although u can feel that vibe in the footboards when riding. but at idle its bad..i did reinstal stock carb and still bike shakes when idiling. replaced cam tesioners, primary is good. have noticed front spark plug has oil deposits on it. also compression is lower than rear head, dont have the numbers on that. mmmm bike has 55,000 miles on it. ( also i did not do the work im not a mechanic) One guy said its the crank, that its out of balance.. one thinks its a valve issue.. when i have changed the oil it looks ok, no chips or gas or anything like that. so any ideas?

well im am leaning that way also. boy the guy that said the crank is out of balance though. wow, whats up with that? I talked with someone who works at harley and he said that 2002 they did not have any problems with the cranks. so i dont knw. The guy i talked to that works at harley said get the compression tested and also have them pressure test the seals/valves, at the same time. that way i will know if the valves are leaking by and if so which ones.. Im a plumber not a engine mechanic!! you want to know whats wrong with your drains?, ok i will take care of it..... engine? i aint got a clue.... thanks for ur help...

I am not an expert on these motors, but I do know that the cam will make that thing shake like a paint mixer. And the valves being off along with the cam, will do it. I'm wondering if just a minor adj to the dist if it has one would fix it. If not, then the push rods need adj if it has them. Is it overhead cam, or the old style? My sportster had a set of points in it and push rods that were adj. And my buddies 1978 , 74 had the adj rods as well. When the engine gets going it flattens out because of the vacuum advance. Hope this helps.

It is normal for the FLHTC to shake badly at idle but once it begins to move, the vibration should go, soaked up by the rubber engine mounts unless they are loose
If you are still concerned try draining the oil & check for water (& metal shards) in the old oil, this would cause lubrication problems for the crank bearing which if damaged would give these symptoms
If the bike runs smoothly above idle it is unlikely to be a carb problem unless there is an air leak on an inlet manifold
Check the frame for cracks as this could produce the same vibrations

I hope this helps(if so please give good feedback)

How do you remove a harley davidson dyna starter?

Two bolts on the right hand side of the bike hold the starter body to the inner primary. But you also have to take off the outer primary, and remove the bolt that holds the starter gear onto the starter shaft.

How to ajust primary chain on 2002electragluide classic

With the engine cold, remove the inspection cover from the outer primary cover. Reach in with your finger and push the primary chain up. You should have 3/4" to 7/8" slack with the engine cold. Adjust by loosening the nut on the adjuster inside the hole and move the shoe up to decrease the movement and down to increase it.

Hi, i have 2001 road king classic. at about 50mph and 3200 rpm i hear a rattle down by the shifter goes away when i put it in the clutch. do you know what is causing this? left side.. its not any loose...

Steve, when is the last time you adjusted your primary chain? If the chain gets too loose, you'll hear a rattle like that when you let off on the gas. If you pull in the clutch, you must let off on the gas to keep the engine from over revving. This is about the only thing I know of that could be causing the problem.

But, just to be sure, I'd drain the primary case and remove the outer primary cover. Disconnect the battery, remove anything that might be in the way. You'll have to remove the oval shaped inspection cover as well. Remove all the bolts and take the outer primary off. Then, you can adjust the chain easily. Adjust it so you have between 5/8" and 7/8" up and down play in the middle of the top run of the chain. Look on the inside of the primary underneath the top in the front at the bolt hole. You can see if the chain has been hitting there by the marks on the underside of the inner primary.

I hope this helps.

Good Luck

Piamary leaking oil vary bad but its tray oil

I assume that your primary is leaking oil and by "tray oil", I think you mean "Grey oil". Oil in the primary that has been in there for about 5000 miles will be gray. It contains clutch debris and metal shavings from the primary chain and sprockets.

Now, the oil is coming from behind the inner primary cover, the inner will have to be pulled off meaning you'll have to take the engine sprocket, clutch assembly, and starter off. To get the starter off, you'll probably have to pull the exhaust system as well. That's a pretty good job.

But, if the oil is simply leaking out from the seam of the inner and outer primary or the derby cover, simply replace the gaskets there. If your outer primary is designed to use an O-ring on the derby cover, use the O-ring and a solid gasket as well. This works well.

How to ofill the primary case on a2003 Harley-Davidson FLHTC/FLHTCI Electra Glide- Classic

Stand the bike straight up, Remove the derby cover. Fill the primary up with oil until the oil barely touches the lower edge of the clutch spring. The clutch spring is a flat dark colored piece of metal inside the bright aluminum clutch outer shell. Do Not overfill. If you do, your clutch will drag and you will not be able to find neutral with the engine running.

Cut in final drive belt on 2007 flhtcu how do you remove it & replace

This is a major job. This is the bad thing about a belt type final drive. You must remove the entire primay, outer primary cover, clutch and primary chain, starter, and inner primary. You must also remove the rear wheel and the swing arm to replace the belt. That's why the job is so expensive plus the belt itself ain't cheap. If I can help you further, let me know.

2005 harley drive belt replace.

pretty involved job...do you have a lift? nned to remove bags, raise bike..remove rear wheel...you will also need to remove the outer primary cover, primary chain, clutch assy, and inner primary cover, and disconnect wing arm...once belt is in place over the front drive pulley, you begin re-assembly...if you have never dont it, i would reccommend buying a service manual, or finding a friend that has...its not really hard, but it isnt a job that you should tackle without some experience
