With an assistant depressing the brake pedal to prevent the wheel from turning, tighten the spindle nut to 164 ft. lbs. (223 Nm). The vehicle should not rest on the tires or move until the spindle nut is tightened.

How do you remove the front drive shaft

Remove the axle nut from the spindle, remve the spindle from the strut to allow room to remove the axle from the spindle, tap the axle out of the spindle. Once loose put a pry bar between the transmission and the axle and pry the axle out of the transmission. Might be a little hard to pry out but it will pop right out. Then to put the new one it just put it in, line it up and tap it in, be sure to torque your axle nut to the correct specifications when tightening or you will have a bad wheel bearing in no time.

Front left spindle removal/installation on a 1998 ford explorer 4X2

is it independent suspension up front cv axles or halfshafts is how you tell i cant remeber on the 98 without looking it up but the best way is to get the chiltons so you have your torque spets to reinstall its not to dificult to do eather way but are you trying to replace the stearing nuckle or the wheel bearings? it eather has cv axles that go through a sealed one piece wheal bearings or it has a splined axle with u joints that go through a bearing hub on the rotertif thats the case the spindle has 6 nuts take them off you can get the special tool a sliding hammer to take it off i just use a dead blow if all else fails wont damage it make sure you check the inner neadle bearing for play. grease bolt back up torque down pack your bearings put in the new bearing seal. now you torqu the berings down with the nut to seat the bearings go back 1/4 of a tern you want 8 to 10 thousanhts of preload you can use a dial indicator to check yourself, set the locking washer and set the locking nut to torque remember when you do that your going to loose some of your preload about 1 to 2 thousenths
