check intake valves for proper seating. If the valves do not close completely it will allow the engine to backfire thru the carb. Another possibility is internal timing caused by the misalignment of the timing gears between the crankshaft and cam gears.
if its hard to get the engine to turn past the compression release then pull your valve coversand try setting your valve lash

It will probally be your valve setting might be off so pull the valve covers off and try setting your valve lash
