Most of the old ironheads have a "level screw" in the side of the outer primary cover. It's located near the bottom front of the case and is usually a phillips head screw. Stand the bike up straight and remove this screw and the round access plug at the top of the cover. Pour oil in until it starts to run out the "oil level hole". It takes about a quart of oil if the primary has been drained. Use H-D Primary lube for Sportsters in this case. Good Luck Steve

What is the engine oil capacit for a 1976 yamaha DT 400 Enduro? what type of oil< and does the oil injection fill separately but with same oil?

The gearbox takes motorcycle gearbox oil 20w40, this can be the same as 4 stroke motorcycle oil, the capacity will be marked on the casing next to the filler 1.5l or similar. Dont use car oil or the clutch may slip.
The oil injection is separate and different , use 2 stroke engine oil. buy from a bike shop or some auto shops.
I had the 1977 model from new, one of the best trail bikes I have owned.

If I remember from when I had one of these in 1976, you need to remove the left hand cover over the front sprocket, and you should see where it goes

Recently, it has become hard to downshift my 2006 VTX1300R. Also difficult to get into neutral? Adjust clutch cable?

If you are using an automotive oil , it may be causing the issue. You can use any oil that is JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate. 20w-50 for warm climate/touring. Car oils use different additives and may cause scoring in certain types of cam bearings. Do not use any oil that says " Energy Conserving " on the label . It will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. If you choose Synthetic oils, they will help your bike run cooler and shift easier. At 1300 km you should have no problem switching over to full synthetic motor oil. I drive a 1976 GL1000 Goldwing and have similar shifting problems unless I use a full synthetic motorcycle oil . The problem is most noticeable in hot weather and just after getting off the freeway and onto city streets. Normal clutch problems on a cable clutch would be slippage caused by a binding cable, a worn clutch, or a cable set too tight.

Oil is coming out the clutch cable at adjusting threads what would cause this

Right where the threaded adjuster goes into the outer primary case, there's a locknut. There should be an O-ring on this treaded piece to seal in the oil. To replace the o-ring, you must go through the procedure to replace the clutch cable by removing the primary outer cover, disassembling the clutch release mechanism, and turning the cable out.

Good Luck

Specs and oil capacity

Most owners of the old Ironheads try to use the oils that were used when they were built. They use straight 50 weight when the weather is cold and 60 weight when temps are hot. But, one could use 10W50 oil in them. I would not use synthetic as any oil leaks will intensify with the use of synthetic oil. The XLH, XLX, and XLS tanks hold three quarts with the exception of the XR1000 which hold two quarts.

Cant work out where clutch cable goes

Standard 10w30 or 10w40 motor oil goes in the gearbox. 2 stroke engine oil goes in the gas @ 4 ounces per gallon for a 32 to 1 mix ratio.

Just fitted new clutch friction plates. have re-installed casing and clutch cable. there is no return tension when i pull in the clutch lever

check the plate installation, one or more must be installed wrong, the last part, the pressure plate must fit in the teeth of the basket, check clutch tension before clutch cover goes on ,use motor cycle oil, car oils will make clutch slip
