I want to change the oil and filter. Where is the pan plug and filter? I have a 2000 Dyna Wide Glide.
The oil pan on the Wide Glide is on the bottom of the transmission. There are two drains of the bottom of the oil pan. The drain in the center is the transmission drain plug. The drain at the left front corner is the engine oil drain. Drain the oil with the bike on the side stand. Refill with the three quarts of oil if you change the filter. Two quarts, 14 ounces if you don't change the filter. Start the engine and allow it to run for about two or three minutes. Check the oil level with the bike on the side stand. The dipstick has two marks one mark is "Full Cold", the other "Full Hot". Top the oil level off to the "Full Cold" mark.
Is the same for a 06 street bob
Well, to be honest with you, I'm not sure. The oil drain is on the bottom of the transmission but seems Harley has been moving them around lately. There are two drains under there I think. The one on the bottom of the pan is the oil drain and the one on the side of the pan is the transmission drain, I THINK. I'd loosen one of the drain plugs just enough to allow a bit of oil to run out. If the oil is dark or black, it's probably the engine oil. If it clean looking, it's probably transmission oil. I wish I could be more precise but I don't work on the later model bikes. I work on the stuff that the dealers will no longer work on, the older bikes like Shovelheads and Ironheads. I also work on Evolution powered bikes as well.
Thank u for ur help. I have never done a oil change on a bike Trying to learn how. I like work on my own stuff
That's commendable. Too many riders these days rely on the dealer to do even the small stuff on their bikes. I'm an old time biker and we kept our own machines running. I have to admit that with all the computerized stuff on them today, it's almost impossible to anything but the most basic of maintenance. The best advice I can give you is to use the best tool in your box, your head. Think about what you're doing before you do it. If you aren't sure, ask someone that knows. Beware fo the person that says he knows everything there is to know about Harleys. I've been riding and working on them for over 30 years and I'll tell you quick that I don't know everything about them. Good Luck and Ride Safe. Steve
