take it to the dealer. for the fix or get the FSM on car and read all the complex steps on doing that. RTM. 1993? no air bags right, (they can be dangerous to any mechanci) pull the steering wheel off. then remove the tamper bolts from key lock assembly. then put in a new lock. once the keyassemlbe is out , take it to any key/lock shop and ask him/her to fix it, if they cant, then buy a new one. if you want to hot wire the car, get the FSM, and use that and its schematics to see if you can do it, if not. ask a qualified, autoelectric shop to do it. if the key switch has locking steering feature, like all here(usa) do not let it fail, is it might lock while driving. DO NOT LET THAT HAPPEN. Safety first, no>?
Very common on BMW's just the same as mine in fact, it done this only sometimes then all the time and then one day it wouldnt start at all. 2 things you can do for now just to get you moving.
Remove the key put the steering lock on then put the key in and turn the steering this will normally give you enough grip to start the car on occassion. sprasy inside the ignition where the key sits with WD-40 again this is a temp fix but will get you going.
The ignition barrel will need replacing in the end though. you can do this your self it's not to difficult to do. you still retain the original key but you need to remove the black shroud from around the outside of the barrel
order a new ignition barrel from your local BMW agent before your lock packs up all together and you will have an even bigger problem, to remove your barrell turn your key to the first position then insert a 1.2mm rod or drill down the little hole in the edge of the chrome key slot to push down the detent that hold the barrell in, pulll out old barrell with the key then fit new one.
common problem and will probably nessesitate replacing ignition switch barrel and steering lock, you will have to remove upper and lower steering covers and lower steering column to lowest position to allow you access to the two shear bolts which hold the steering lock assembly to the steering column, your local bmw agent shoul be able to get you the parts to allow you to use your own keys.
had this problem myself recently and i had to remove steering wheel and side covers remove shear bolts from lock housing using a smal chisel that lets you lake of lock housing and steering lock to replace them your local bm dealer should be able to order the correct one to fit your key, your car will still run with key out but you have to insert it to start it.
you will need to get a repaire manual for your car. then you will need a steering wheel and lock plate puller.(+ new lock key tumbler set) then use your new book to walk you though the changing of your ingnition. good luck.
it is better to buy a new ignition barrel.it takes a special socket to get the screws out, once the screws are out they do not need to be replaced.buy new barrel, disconnect negative battery cable, disconnect wires from barrel assembly, remove barrel from colum. first take vin# to dealership parts department to get correct barrel assembly, the keys with new assembly will fit doors and trunk
Remove steering column shroud(cover)and tap ignition barrel with small hammer while twisting key backwards and forwards, also turn steering wheel backwards and forwards sometimes this is enough to release key as the locking pins in barrel and the steering lock pin do sometimes jam.You will have to remove steering column shroud to replace ignition barrel if tapping/hitting it doesnt work anyway so its not a wasted effort.Good luck, let me know how it works out
