This can be caused by leaking exhaust gaskets air leaks in intake, or lean fuel mixture. low ignition voltage carbon fouled spark plugs. tight valve clearance or burnt valve
You might want to look for an intake leak first.....which might be leaning out the mixture AFter the carb. Possibly you don't have the carbs seated in the intake runner. Some intake runners develop cracks in the rubber but they have to be pretty deep before they leak.
Also can't remember if the V Star has vacuum petcock....inspect the vacuum line for leaks.
first PO171 o2 bank 1 s1 lean PO174 o2 bank2 lean PO401 cyl 1 misfire when an engine misfires the oxygen sensor will read the oxygen from that cyl sensor doesnt read fuel so every misfire is a air pump to diagnose we have to fix misfire first check the coil wires and plugs for cyl 1 use spray bottle with water run engine hot at idle spray wires with water if enging runs rough shakes or stalls then replace the wires dont spray with to much water if the wires are real bad you may not be able to restart engine
try this first once fix misfire clear codes and drive it
what you need to is pull a plug and see what it looks like this will tell what you need to do to your jetting. yes this could be a lean backfire it could also be fat. if your plugs are looking white your lean if they are back you fat. you need to get the bike fat before you lean it out. the first set in jetting is to get your bike to pull hard under full accl. once you have that then you can work out your idle. don't forget about your air/fuel screw. the air/fuel IS a part of everything from idle to full wide open. do you have pipes and a air filter? the best people to call is factory pro. they make jet kits and i have learned a lot from those kats.they know there poop and can get you set up right. remember to set your rear cyl just a little fatter then the front it will help with cooling. If you need more help please feel free to call me at the shop C.C. Motorsports (361) 885-7787 Good luck Mark
Carbs are not synchronize. Running richon yhe back and lean on the front. If each carb has irs own filer, check the rear carb air filter.. But for sure get the carbs synchronized. Good Luck.
Exhaust 'pops' is generally caused by unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust, air leaks can cause this too.
When you do any carb work its always best practice to check the carb balance and idle mixture settings.
What colour is the spark plug? http://www.dansmc.com/Spark_Plugs/Spark_Plugs_catalog.html
sync 'ing the carbs you need either a manometer or two vacuum GAUGES. pREFERABLY A MANONMETER..iT'S A MATTER OF BALANCING THE CARBS TO HAVE THE SAME VACUUM AT THE SAME POINT OF THROTTLE OPENING.. WHAT IS YOUR LOCATION?
under the left side of the gas tank you will see i black knob/screw at the end of what looks like a hose. the knob faces the rear of bike. that adjusts the idle. its real easy to find and the only adjustment you can make to the carbs.
