Problem with power to my Yamaha XVS 650/A V-Star Classic, it won't start?

hey Joseph,, have you had the battery load tested?? Have the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) checked.. O'Reilly, Autozone, Advance Auto..etc can load test your battery... 12 volts only wil not get much done... you need amperage and 13.6+ volts...

2006 Yamaha 650 V star wont start

what is your battery voltage? check for loose batter terminals and ground cables. Charge the battery if its low and then see if it will start. once its running test the voltage again. It should put out 13.5-15 volts just off idle. if it doesnt, something is wrong with your charging system.

Any issues with after market batteries? thanks Bob

Check the voltage with a volt meter with the cycle running should be 14.5 volts or less preferably 14 volts. If it is higher check or replace the voltage regulator. I just replaced mine on a Yamaha 1100 V Star 2002.

2002 V Star 1100 voltage problems

oh yes..........
voltage regulator.... this unit also contains the rectifier which changes generator electricty from AC to DC for the battery. test the volt reg and it may be ok for the volts, but if the rectifier part is knackered, it will completely screw up every battery, they will not take AC !!!! every time I get a bike in for repair with volt reg. probs I always put in a new battery

Fuses

use a volt meter to check for voltage at the fuse with the bike running ....shouldnt be more than about 14.7 volts....if its 15-17 or higher your voltage regulator is blown and needs replacing...if its within spec then you probably have a short somewhere in the power wire to the headlight thats touching ground (the frame)
