Hello, I've been baffled by my 2003 883R starting sometimes - runs great then I park it for 10-15 minutes and it pops / backfires out the exhaust and won't start. I will wait a few minutes and it starts up as if nothing happens. I've tried changing carbs, replacing the vacuum hoses, checking for seal leaks. It seems to start when hot, usually when cold - it's that period when it's slightly cooled off that seems to give me the most trouble. Any ideas? Thanks - Brian

Following... Mine started doing this and now seems to only have half power. Replaced spark plugs, disassembled and cleaned carb, and replaced air filter.
back firing , can mean a lean (popping on deceleration) or a rich mixture backfiring a lot , . check your connections at the headers and your carb to engine , and carb to airbox ... air is getting in , . look at your air filter .... look at your exhaust for blockages ... if this is the exup (power valve ) model then check the valve actuator , as it can lock closed , ... either remove it or wire it open
The primary cause for backfiring on deceleration is an air leak - if the baffles have been removed or modified or if the gaskets in the exhaust tract are not sealing properly, fresh air can be introduced into the exhaust stream causing a pop or backfire. Check your exhaust system - especially if you have recently had an oil change, since the pipe has to be removed to change the oil filter on this model.
Backfiring out of the exhaust is usually an ignition problem. Unburned fuel is getting into the exhaust system because it's not being ignited in the cylinder. When the engine fires on that cylinder again, it ignites the raw fuel in the exhaust causing the pop that people call a backfire. I'd investigate the ignition system. Connect a timing light to each of the spark plug wires if it has a single fire ignition or either of them if the ignition system is the stock dual fire. Start the engine and watch the timing light to tell if the engine is missing as the light will miss a flash.
nope, distributor plugs and wires, change those and the pcv valve. Run you total no more than $100 for parts if you shop around a bit, since parts prices vary greatly. the spark is not entering the cylinders correctly to burn the fuel properly, replace those items and you will not have this issue unless you have some rare deadly engine disease- :-) Hope it helps and have a nice day!
that seems to be what they do, i too have a 650a and have jardines on with baffles, it still pops and cackles when you roll off the gas. are you running no baffels? when i took mine out i noticed a drop in power as i had removed the requierd back pressure for optimum performance. you can get small baffles to slip into straight pipes from jc whitney for about $5 each.
anyway back to the backfire. my local bike shop shrugged their sholders when i asked them about mine saying it's what they do. you will get used to it and you will find a way to kinda not make it do it so much. i actually have grown to like it now, except when there are cops about.
