In normal operation, there is no way the chain or valve springs could break a shaft. The only possibility, other than a defective camshaft when the bike was new, is that the cam chain was so loose the slack bound up around the sprocket causing enough pressure to break the shaft. Replace the chain, sprocket and camshaft and check the operation of the cam chain tensioner assembly. Please rate my answer.
Your engine jumped time, or a belt broke or something caused the piston to slam into the valves and break a cam.I don't know what you have for cams, or belts on that bike, but if its like mine, a belt breaks and good bye cam.

In normal operating conditions, it would take a defect in manufacturing of the cam for it to break like that. There is no way the valve springs or the cam chain could put the kind of pressure needed to cause the shaft to break. The only possible way this could happen, ( and not be a defective camshaft ), is if the cam chain were so loose it bound up around the cam gear. Replace the entire camshaft assembly including the sprocket and chain. Check the chain tensioner for proper operation as well.
