Question about 2003 Harley Davidson XL 53 C Sportster Custom 53

I have a 1960 Harley Servicar trying to convert to a 12 volt system. The original system was 6 volt. The original voltage regulator was an AC/Delco with only three poles (Battery, Armature and Field). the Bosch had 5 poles and I am totally confused as to how to wire it? I thought I had it right but the generator light stays on? Larry

    I merely went on line and searched out Bosch regulator wiring for generator systems and within a few minutes found several wiring diagrams and guess what.....? Each had five pole regulators and each showed identical wiring schematics. AND, each showed that the regulator needed a separate ground wire from the center bottom pole to the generator case. Once I installed that wire the system started working properly and all was good.

    Therefore, your BS about books is all wet. In any event Harley did not use Bosch regulators only three pole AC/Delco regulators and there is no book in the land that would show how to wire a Bosch regulator in place of a AC/Delco regulator.

    So if you are some kind of expert charging for your BS answers you are a total rip. Public beware.

04 Harley Dyna Wide Glide,some sort of relay/starting issue. Bought the bike used, withing in a month had a no start issue, when you remove the solenoid cover and push in the shaft the bike starts.


Hi Dave, Arnie was right on target with the alternator/voltage regulator senario, in order for the starting system to work properly you have to start with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better. If you have a multimeter, there are a few quick things you can check.
1. Make sure battery connections are clean and tight, especially the "NEGATIVE" cable at "BOTH" ends.
2. Check the voltage drop at the battery when you hit the starter button, anything below 9 volts you might have a faulty battery.
3. Check voltage at the battery with the bike running at 3,600 RPM
should be 14.3 to 14.7 volts. If you are not getting these numbers you might have a faulty voltage regulator.
4. Make sure voltage regulator is grounded and functioning properly, watch video below on how to test a voltage regulator.
5. Unplug the connector to the alternator and hook your multimeter leads to the alternator (pin/socket selection does not matter) set the multimeter to AC volts, at an idle the meter should read 16 to 20 volts AC. at 2,000 RPM 32 to 40 AC volts, 3,000 RPM 48 to 60 AC volts. If you are not getting these numbers you may have a faulty rotor, follow step 6
6. Set the multimeter to OHM'S, connect one lead to the alternator (any pin/socket) and the other to ground, meter should read infinity. Connect both leads to the alternator meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 OHM'S. If you are not getting these numbers you have a bad stator.
7. Check all wiring in the charging circuit for worn or chaffed spots and all wiring connectors in the circuit for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets, corroded pins/sockets is the # 1 offender. Also take the plunger out of the solenoid and use a stiff brass wire brush to clean the plate and contact shoes, and make sure they are tight.

What or how does the battery get its charge


Most bike have an alternator driven off the left-hand crankshaft shaft.
This turns with the engine, producing the AC charging power.
This power then runs through a voltage regulator, that both converts the the AC voltage into DC voltage, and regulates the amount of voltage flowing into the remaining electrical system.

Now, you did do the first step correctly.
DC volt meter to battery terminals to see if you get 13-14 volts DC with engine running.
Next, locate voltage regulator and unplug connector for wires coming FROM the regulator, and hook up the DC voltmeter.
With engine running, you should have 13-14 (or so) DC volts.

If not, locate and unplug wires coming from alternator to regulator, and hook up AC (note change from DC to AC) voltmeter.
With engine running, should have AC voltage (this could be 20-40 volts or more).

This will let you know where the problem is, and what needs to be replaced.

1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12 volts or better after charging.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.

Testing voltage regulator


ENGINE OFF,UNPLUG the regulator, test continuity from each conductor to ground on the stator, if you have continuity STATOR IS SHORTED... if you test voltage OUTPUT at the stator, it should be around ten volts AC! NOT DC! per thousand RPM... THEN use a 12 volt test lite from regulator leads to ground, if ANY light happens at either lead, BAD regulator

2006 harley dyna charging at low speed, not at high rpms


This used to be a common problem back in the days of generators but I've not heard of this since Harley went to the alternator systems in 1970. It is unusual to say the least.

The first thing I'd do is have my battery tested. This is simply good procedure anytime you are experiencing a charging system problem.

Next, check the output of your alternator. To do this, you'll need a DVOM, digital volt ohm meter. Unplug the voltage regular at the front of your engine case close to the oil filter. Now, put your DVOM into "Voltage", "AC", Range 50 volts or better. Now, with the engine running, put one lead from the meter to one of the pins in the plug in the engine case. Put the other lead in the other pin. Rev the engine up to about 2000-2500 RPM. You should read at least 30 Volts AC. You must have the meter in the AC positon because an alternator puts out alternating current. Your regulator converts it to Direct Current voltage for the charging the battery and reduces the voltage. If you are reading thirty volts or better, I would suspect the Voltage Regulator is your problem.

I have a 39 ford 6 volt battery operated car. I


you need a voltage doubler circuit which feeds from your 6V DC system and converts it to AC and steps it up and converts it to 12V DC. This device might be difficult to find. OR use a 6Vdc power inverter and just use a 120volt AC fan if much easier to source out in your area.
You might want to try a 12VDC high speed fan and see if the 50% reduced speed is already sufficient for you.
