The gas needle mostly goes up to a quarter or little less than a half tank when you fill up but not right away, sometimes it's about after you've ride 3-10 miles. The gauge will drop to the low level

therecould be a few things wromg simple fix, first check the float sounds like it has a hole in it take bolts out of bottom of tank an slide fuel pump an sending unit out there will be a arm that moves up an down on the end of thqt arm will be the float you can dip it in water to see if it floats or sinks replace if it sinks

Either you have a bad fuel level sending unit or the stepper motor that drives the fuel gauge is bad. A high end scan tool will be required to determine if it is the sending unit.

FUEL SENDING UNIT IN THE FUEL TANK FAULTY.THE FLOAT ARM ATTACH TO SENDING UNIT.THE FUEL SENDING IS A RHEOSTAT WITH ELECTRICAL CURRENT FLOWING TO IT.YOU HAVE A COIL OF RESISTANCE WIRE IN RHEOSTAT.WHEN FLOAT+ ARM RISE WHEN PUMPING MORE FUEL IN TANK THIS CAUSE MORE CURRENT FLOW THROUGH COIL FROM RHEOSTAT TO FUEL GAUGE WHICH CAUSE FUEL GAUGE MOVE TO FULL MARK.WHEN FUEL LEVEL DROP THE FLOAT + ARM DROP CAUSE LOW CURRENT THROUGH RHEOSTAT COIL WIRE IN WHICH CAUSE FUEL GAUGE NEEDLE TO DROP SHOWING LOW FUEL LEVEL IN THE FUEL TANK.

Fuel gauge registers full when filled with gas....drive 20mi and then drops to zero...still gas in the tank

The sender unit in the tank is the most likely cause. To test the panel unit, remove the wire from the fuel tank unit and gound it. The panel gauge needle should move up full scale to hot. Remove the wire from the ground and the gauge should return to empty. If this test is ok, the tank unit needs to be replaced.

1999 buick when fuel gauge drops below 3/4 it is is not accurate

i dont know the specifics of a Regal, but usually, when a needle fluctuates too much, is because the float gauge in the gas tank is worn out, or its mount became loose. You cant see that effect on a full tank because the instrument needle and the float are pegged against the stop.

Fuel gauge sending unit in the gas tank needs replacing.

Gas Gauge won't move

Replace the fuel sensor / sending unit, it is inside the gas tank, it is a lot of work to drop the gas tank, I have done it on other cars... If you want to do it make sure the tank is almost empty it is very heavy with all that gas inside make sure there is no open flames or cigarretes close
Good Luck

I had the same problem. My battery was going bad. When I replaced it with a new one, the fuel gauge worked fine.
