1988 honda shadow 1100 won't accelerate in 4th gear and makes rattling sound in 1st gear

There is so many things that could cause what you are going through. the first thing i would do i check the clutch. it is where most problems with the tranny start and then you will get so a hole at the shop telling you that your tranny is bad when all that was wrong is the clutch being out of adjustment. take it to a shop you trust and have them check the clutch. it is a cheap process and does not take long to do at all. if it needs adjusting then you will be done and out without having to spend too much at all. if its more then you will be able to find out there. first thought though is the clutch.

My steed is slow to pick up speed and when i am on the 4th or 5th gear, it has no power and i can hear some chain rattling which is not present on 1st to 3rd gear. also the exhaust backfires a little when...

sounds like your not getting enough juice to the coil possibly a lose wire in the ignition system
