Question about 2000 Harley Davidson FLTR-FLTRI Road Glide

1 Answer

I am looking for an oil passage diagram for a 01 fltr with the A motor. Trying to figure out a easy way to drain ALL of the oil out of the crankcase. I figure if the oil filter is blocked off and the tank return line is removed, the old crankcase oil will be forced out the tank return line all over my floor when the motor is cranked over. But the oil pump will still feed new clean oil to the case replacing the old oil. Sound crazy? Any thoughts or diagrams would be apreaciated. Thanks Motorpsycho

Try this instead. Visit this site and look for "The Scavenger" system.

You can modify the system and use diesel fuel and cheap 10W30 Wt oil to flush the engine and then add the "good" oil and a new filter. I have the procedure in .pdf format if you'll contact me directly at

Excessive oil from chain oiler is there a adjustment

More varied between motor types.

U ?
UL ?
W ?
WL ?

The serial number on the crankcase will tell.

It should be similar to something like - 46U12345
46(year) U(motor-Medium Compression 74" SV [Side Valve = Flathead]) 12345(serial number).

Also, you did't state if you mean primary or main drive chain.
But yes, some have an adjustment for one, others for both.

This might help:

Drain plug clogged

If you mean the drain plug for the motor crankcase, you might stick a screwdriver or wire or something like that in and our of the hole until the motor oil runs out.
If the transmission drain plug, same answer.
If the radiatror drain plug, try taking the radiator cap off and blow air into the drain with an air hose gently to open it. (NOT high pressure so you don't damage the radiator).
Be Blessed.

this oil is usually from the trans cooler in the rad that helps keep the trans fluid at operating temperature by the engine coolant absorbing the heat from the trans fluid .the cooler is a steel tubing in the rad tanks that the engine coolant runs around and absorbs the heat.when the cooler rusts through the trans oil seeps into the coolant.if it was motor oil it could be caused by a head gasket were the oil passage is next to the coolant passage in the gasket and it seeps into the coolant passage.however the coolant pressure is alot higher than the oil pressure and the coolant usually enters the crankcase.

I have briggs and stratton powered mower with the 18.5 v-twin ohv intek engine modle 407777 type 0121-E5 CODE 000512ZYG MY PROBLEM IS THAT MY CRANKCASE IS FULL OFA GAS OIL MIXTURE THE OIL FILTER ALSO...

When the float in the carb sticks, it allows fuel to drain into the cylinder, that runs pass the rings into the crankcase. When the crankcase is full the pistons cannot go down, and the starter won't turn the engine. Drain all the oil gas mixture, and refill with proper oil. Replace float, needle and seat in the carb bowl. Throughly clean fuel passages, and bowl. If motor won't turn, remove spark plug and turn over engine a few times to remove gas oil mixture from the cylinder too.

No manual, looking to top up the oil in crankcase.

Take the two hex screws out of right side rear cover and remove the chrome cover. The clear lens is the oil level check. The oil filler is to the left of the clear lens oil check.
The oil filter is under the battery, and the oil drain plug is toward the back underside of the engine.

Warm engine and stand upright on centerstand to drain oil, let drain for 15 minutes.

I use Castrol Power1 GPS 4T 10W-40 in my air and oil cooled Suzuki. You will need 5 quarts when changing oil and filter. The link below has diagrams of the bike in exploded views.

Welcome to the world of Harley Davidson the crankcase breathes threw this passage and EPA loves it ,the older models used to vent out and onto the chain to help lube it.So this is a normal event as long as there is not to much oil

if your saying you suspect sludge then you may have an oil passage clogged. Trying to use cleaners can actually worsen the condition if the passage was partially clogged and you broke a piece of the sludge off. Not serviceing the oil enough is the cause of the sludge if its got to that point.

Sometimes water vapor gets in through the vent in the crankcase and as the motor heats the only way to go is up!!!!! I wouldn't worry about it since you checked the oil and it looked fine. Oil pump

This is a fairly major job that involves dropping the oil pan from the motor to even get to it.
Depending on motor size, is how difficult it is to get to.
You can do it while the engine is in the car, but it is easier if you pull the motor.

How good are your mechanical abilities? And do you have a good work area to do this in?
Along with, a fairly complete tool set.

But that's the gist of it. Drain the fluids, remove the oil pan, loosen and raise the distributor, pull off the oil pump, clean as needed, put in the new one, replace the seals and gaskets, reinstall the oil pan, prime the pump by running a shaft down the distributor shaft passage, reinstall the distributor, time as needed.
Figure an easy 8 to 10 hours minimum.
As stated, that is the general picture, there are a number of other smaller detail steps.
