Question about 1999 Yamaha YZF 600 R thunder cat

Why does chain keep getting loose its been tightened twice and i have had the bike six months and yes the nut is at right touch on tightening

The lock nut is not tight enought and your not adjusting the adjusters the same causeingthe wheel to be cocked to one side and allowing it to come loose over time.

Chain coming loose


Yes. Loosen the two nuts on the back wheel. When they are loose just pull the wheel back until the chain is tight enough and tighten nuts while holding the tire in the proper position at the proper tightness of the chain. Make sure that the tire is running true when tightened.

On mountain bike the chain or peddles seem to slip or click goning up a hill. Is it the chain slipping or worn gear?


It sounds like your chain is loose. Flip the bike over and loosen up the nuts on the back tire and tighten the nuts as you are pulling the rim back making the chain as tight as you can. You might need someone to help you pull as you tighten the nuts.

I need to tighten the chian on my schwinn airdyne.


Two places to tighten the chain and it requires you to loosen the nuts on BOTH sides of the bike, almost at the same time. Start at the fan wheel (top) of the bike. First thing you need to do is to loosen the little nut at the hub of the fan wheel on both sides. Unscrew it almost to the point of taking it off, but leave it screwed on the end of the bolt so it will stay on the bike. Then use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut a bit on one side and then do the same on the other side OR use both hands and loosen both at the same time by unscrewing with adjustable wrench in opposite directions on both sides. Once the wheel is loose, you want to sit in front of the bike and pull both of the large nuts at the same time toward you and the chain will tighten. The goal is to have the fan wheel centered and for you to be able to see about 1/4" inch of clear gap behind the nut on both sides. Then use your fingers to tighten the nuts to the frame just enough until you can use the adjustable wrench again. I have sometimes used a flat head screwdriver to insert into the gaps to prevent the chain from loosening up. The tighten the nut on both sides of the bike. Be sure you tighten the little nuts as well (they are called chain tensioners). That SHOULD do the trick. However, if your bike chain is still too loose, you need to do the same for the chain at the pedal area, That requires the same thing all over again, but in most cases, the chain loosens at the top part of the bike (fan wheel place). However, if you do work on the pedal area, you want the chain to be pushed toward the fan and not toward the **** side of the bike. It may sound crazy but that's the only way to tighten the chain. give me a thumbs up with my solution.

Setting blade tension withouty gauge


With the chainsaw positioned and with the bar/chain combo loosely assembled properly on the chainsaw power-head. With the guide bar/chain adjuster inserted properly into the bar. Using a rag or wearing gloves. Notice how much up and down movement is at the guide bar tip. You must use this to your best advantage!! With the chain adjuster loose. finger tighten the bar nut or nuts. Hold the bar-chain assembly in the up position. To tension the chain, turn the adjuster in the correct direction to tighten the chain. DO NOT LOOSEN YOUR HOLD ON THE BAR, KEEP THE BAR IN THE UP POSITION. Rotate the chain along the bar to make sure it is free to move back and forth, KEEP THE BAR UP. Tighten the tensioner until the chain just touches the bottom of the guide bar. Check for back and forth movement again. Tighten the tensioner no more than a quarter of a turn. CONTINUE TO HOLD THE BAR UP. Now tighten the bar buts or nut snugly against the sprocket & chain guard cover. Check for movement again. If satisfactorily tight and free movement is attained the chain bar combination is properly adjusted.
This scenario will change with different types and brands of chainsaws. It is always very helpful if posters would include a modicum of make, model information with their queries.

How tighten a chain


well first get the bike up on a stand or set it on a milk crate. Loosen up main axle nuts you may need another wrench on the other side to back it up. loosen any small chain adjustment nuts. pull the chain as far back as it can go all the time looking a the chain sag..you want to keep about 5/8 to 1 inch play...lock just the axle nuts down snug...now spin the tire to see that all parts of the chain maintain this amount of sag. if its too tight in one area, you have a "stretched chain", and this will now be the focal point for tightening up the chain...this tighter part must have "some" slack in it...id say give it about 1/2 inch...now tighten up the chain adjustment nuts finger tight and look at your rear sprocket and make sure it lines up perfectly straight on with the counter shaft sprocket up front. Once this is aligned, tighten the smaller nuts snug, then proceed to torque down lightly maybe 10- 20 ftlbs. now spin the tire to check your slack in the chain did it move on you? Then you have to tighten or loosen the chain adjustment nuts a little more in or out till you get it right so it can move into the correct position. Once you got it right torque down on the main axle nuts 50-60ft lbs. Now tighten evenly each chain nut with the same ammount of turns to each....tighten the last nut down hard onto the first so they wont vibrate off. Now you should lube the chain..and your ready to go. after a while of hard riding recheck everything just to make sure shes secure! Can i get a very helpful on this. thanks!

My chain keeps getting loose....is that normal?


On a new chain perhaps. One that has been in service for a while the stretch should be adjusted out. Not holding the nose of the bar up as you tighten the bar nuts is the usual cause of this malady.
Chain Adjustment
  1. Make sure the chain brake is off (gloves recommended).
  2. If necessary, loosen the bar nuts that are clamping the clutch cover in place (or whatever holds the clutch cover and bar on). They do not need these really loose - finger tight will do.
  3. Ease the tension adjustment until the chain is obviously loose.
  4. Using one hand, hold the nose of the bar up.
  5. While holding the nose up, adjust the tensioner so that the center of the chain just touches the underside of the bar, add a touch more.
  6. Continue holding the nose of the bar up & tighten up the bar nuts / bolts / quick-release system. HTH

How to tighten a loose chain


To tighten a loose chain you need to pull the cotter key pin from the rear axle then loosen but do not remove the nut. It just has to be loose enough to slide in the swingarm. At this point there are tension adjusters on the ends of the swing arm you tighten them to take the slack out of the chain. NOT TO TIGHT! You should have 1 inch of play in the chain this is up down play not front to back. I push the chain up the highest it can go and measure how far it falls. NOTE: TURN THE TENSION ADJUSTERS THE SAME AMOUNT THE SAME DIRECTION IF THE AXLE IS TWISTED YOU WILL THROW THE CHAIN. This can make for a bad six months!

How do I tighten my chain? its too loose and keeps falling off.


Mike's answer might do it. My saw has a feature in the Chain Bar to turn right or left to move the Bar in or out. Loosen those same nut Mike wrote about, but now turn the Bar Feature (gear) to adjust, and then tighten the two nuts.

How to tighten the chain


Loosen the rear axle nut mounting the wheel to the swing arm, then loosen the lock bolt on the top of the chrome adjuster ( left and right adjusters ), then loosen the lock nut on the long adjuster screw. Run the nut about 1/2" down the length of the adjuster screw. Now turn the adjuster screws equally in a clockwise direction to remove the excess slack from the chain. There should be index lines on the swing arm that the single index line on the chrome adjuster is referenced to. Example; If the chrome index line meets up with perhaps the fourth index mark on the swing arm on the left side, the right side should be at the same position. This keeps the wheel in alignment. When the adjustment is finished tighten the axle nut then tighten the adjuster lock nuts and then tighten the lock bolt on top of the chrome adjusters.

Leave some slack in the chain. Mid-chain you should be able to move the chain up and down about one and one half inches. If the chain can be lifted at the rear sprocket it is too loose. Lubricate the chain and the control cables on the bike. What condition are the front and rear sprockets in? The teeth should be bluntly rounded at the tip. If the teeth are sharp at the tip, or getting that way, then the sprockets are way past time to be replaced. Note that a worn sprocket can quickly ruin a new chain.

Loose chain


Loosen the Back Nuts on the Side of the Rear Wheel, Then use a Wrench to Turn the Bolts extending out the Rear of the Bike in Clockwise to pull the Rear Wheel Back, Thus Tacking Slack out of the Chain. Do Not over Tighten as the CHain Tightens some itself with Flex when you put Weight on it. Retighten Axle Nut. Thats it.
