The rattle is comming from the clutch area on the primary side.It stops when the starter disengages after the bike starts.I put in a new starter still has the rattle.

I doubt it's coming from the primary. The first time you start the EVO motor, you will hear the tappets in the rocker boxes tapping until the oil comes up to lube and quiet them. Tat is most likely what you are hearing.

It is a worn primary chain ,,,when its standing the oil runs out the chain and on start up it takes a fuw turns to get the oil back into the chain,, check the oil leavel first but dont worry to much about it, as its pricy to fix so just put up with it

if this noise stops when you disengage the starter its likley to be the starter clutch its self not a big job to fix but a little pricy to do

Connecting rods?

It sounds like your clutch basket came loose. Take the side cover off and see how much slop you have in the clutch basket

Checking connecting rod bearings

Hi there, I would expect to hear con rod bearings rattling when the engine is revved whilst stationary. A starter motor can cause peculier noises when faulty, worth checking. But if the noise is only when moving while still in gear I would suspect an output bearing on the gearbox. First check the drive train tension, if this is too tight this will overload the bearings. It does sound like it could be somewhere between the crankshaft output sprocket and the rear wheel. As with all things best to try the easy bits first before stripping the engine. Good luck ride free!

2004 Harley Davidson Rattle in Primary

Pretty hard to offer suggestion with so little info.

If chain drive could be chains too loose.

Check oil level.

Get M/C shop to check......alot of good money at stake there.

How do I romove starter from 98 Heritage softail

You have to remove the primary cover and unbolt the starter jack shaft from the inside hold it with a pair of channel locks to get the screw undone then goto the oposite side you will need a six inch extention plus a six inch ball allen wrench for a 3/8 drive socket wrench there are two screws on the back of the primary back those out then disconect the battery cable from the starter and pull it out. it is a bit of a process if you dont have the right tools dont attempt also please diconnect the battery before you start once you get the primary cover off you have exposed the primary chain it can take your fingers and or hand
get the manuel it will give you a play by play but you will need special tools and they aren't cheep
