I need to know what octane low and high i can safley rin im my polaris 2004 prox2 800 ....... sorry wouldnt let put snowmobile in catagory!

I have Just purchased Polaris 2001 Magnum 500 4x4, the yellow AWD switch was missing so bought a new one but the ATV is constantly in 4 wheel drive and realised now that they have by passed the switch some...


OUCH.. I hope you got it cheap... sorry.. You are going to have problems until you get the wiring straightened out completely..and by a Factory Trained Professional... I know thats expensive.!! The other alternative is to pass this machine on to someone else.(yikes) ... and take the money you would have spent on repairs and purchase a new(er) one with NO issues.. when you go look at another machine, take someone with you that knows ATV's..or take it to a shop for a full check-up!!

Nothing will happen, your car will run fine. I do reccomend however, to use top tier fuel, NOT Arco, Thrifty, or cheaper stations. Cheaper stations do not clean their fuel.

Wow I thought I was the only one with this problem with a 2004 Optra 5. Some times my engine will run on after the key is taken out. This problem stops after either stalling the car or opening the door. I...


This is called dieseling and is caused by poor combustion of the fuel. What happens is the fuel causes carbon to build up in the cylinders. This carbon retains heat and when the mixture (air and gasoline) are compressed, this carbons glowing hot causes the mixture to predetonate before the spark plug fires.When you turn off the key, all that does is remove the spark from the plugs and power to your fuel pump (you may have a mechanical fuel pump instead.) However, your car still has some fuel left in the reservoir and the final turn of the engine sucks some fuel into one cylinder where the glowing carbon fires that cylinder, which draws some fuel in to the next cylinder and so forth untill the fuel left in the reservoir is exhausted.

As I said this can be caused by carbon build up, or it could be caused by using low octane fuel in a high compression engine. The later is usually indicative of using low octane in an engine designed for high octane fuel. In your case, I suspect that you have gotten some lousy fuel from a shady service station.

One test you can perform is to put a half tank of high octane and a half tank of low octane and see if the dieseling goes away, or if your car is suppose to use high octane, then use high octane

This dieseling really does not hurt the engine, but it causes you to get low milage as the engine is not combusting the fuel efficently.

Some auto mechanics will try to sell you an engine flush for between 200 and 300 bucks, that is suppose to get rid of the carbon build up, but my opinion is that it is mouse milk.

My uplander use to get around 18 mpg. now it is only getting( if im lucky) high 14s to very low 15s. and this started to happen after i put some injector cleaner in it ( seafoam)


some octane boosters have detergent in them if you use some it may clean out your system. other causes for poor fuel mileage are, low air pressure in tires, restricted air/dirty air filter of fouled spark plugs. you may also try using a higher fuel octane for one tank and see if it helps when you switch back to your usual. hope this helps

what kind of oil do you put in it?im not sure but i think for your type of 4 wheeler you use 10w-40 or 20w-50,if the oil you put in is too thin it will over heat,as for the smoking it could be the rings or it could be valve stem seals letting a little oil drip by,but you wouldnt have very much smoke if it was the valve stem seals my guess is rings and if it is your atv will be losing power sometime soon if you keep riding it and will eventually quit running,then you will need a new piston and rings,i could be wrong,im just now getting into atv repair...........hope it helps

when to turn it off, the spark plugs stop instantly but the fuel is still sucked into the combustion chamber. your idle might be adjusted too high. try using a higher octane fuel

If you have pinging it could be because the Octane in the fuel is too low. If you have run a full tank of high octane fuel through it and it hasn't made any difference, it could be that the plugs need to be changed, it could also be that the timing might have jumped a tooth or if you have a VVT engine the VVT solenoid or gear maybe going bad.
