Check the carburetor mounting nuts and exhaust header connections for tightness. Any spark plug with a large amount of deposits on the internal insulator can cause pre-ignition. Put the transmission in neutral with the engine running, adjust the idle speed screw, which sits higher on the slide housing than the idle mix screw, for proper idle speed. If no idle speed screw exists, turn the throttle cable adjustment on top of the slide cover inward until the speed is correct.

Back fires when I shift up in gear

If it backfires immediately when you engage the clutch and release the throttle, you have a carburetion issue. Fuel mixture is too rich at idle. (If you have fuel injection, your controller is set too rich at idle.)

Wont shift from nutral in to gear while running

Often, it mean that the clutch stay engage.
Now the question can be, is the idle to high for the clutch to disengage while at idle? you might try to reduce the idle speed by turning eather the nob on carburator or the ajustement on the cable.

then if the idle is very low and the clutch still engage (that is why you can not shift) you migh want to check at the clutch and see if it is not stuck.

Have a 1540 zero turn. runs fine till you engage the electric clutch to mow.backfires and won't run right. runs fine when you shut of mower blade drive

the electric clutch sometimes jumps of the steel retention dowl. That then pulls the wires and stops the motor. You will need to remove the clutch and reposition it over the dowl. You will also need to re-fit the electric connections. Watch out for the fuse as this will often blow.

X520 jd mower trouble

Sounds like a problem with the governor. Start it up. Don't engage the blades. Drive to a hill. Idle all the way down. Try driving up the hill. The motor should pick up when it slows while pulling up the hill. If it doesn't, the governor isn't working right.

2000 yamaha r1 revs high at normal driving speeds at normal operating temps

you must adjust the idling level..theres a screw way above the shifter (somewhere there) connected to the end of metal plate, turn to the right and idling level is high like yours, turn to the left and idling level is low...you figure where it'll sit right

Compressor and fans do not turn on until rev engine

I passed this question the first time I read it, so I will take a stab at it now.
The fans don't come on until the compressor has pumped the freon pressure up to say 150 or 200 psi. And the compressor clutch has to have voltage to engage the clutch.
I wonder if the clutch is going and needs 14 volts instead of 12 to engage ? Or the relay that powers the clutch ?
Speeding up the engine would increase voltage from the alternator.
This is assuming the serpentine belt is tight and everything else is working correctly.
I think I would swap the relay with another and put a meter on that circuit to the ac clutch to see what it takes to engage it.

Grass trimmer head keeps turning without power applied to throttle

On an Echo, this means that the clutch is staying engaged to the walls of the clutch drum. Either the clutch drum is loose and the clutch pads are catching it as it turns, or the idle on the engine is set too high and the centrifugal clutch is just opening enough to catch the drum and spin it. Check the clutch housing and your idle speed.

Idles high

Idle speed is not related to the clutch position. With the pedal depressed, the engine is freewheeling and is not engaged with the remainder of the driveline. Likely the idle speed is the same with the engine running in neutral or with the clutch depressed. check the idle air control and clean the throttle plate in the throttle body as well as checking the throttle cable for binding etc. If there is a small vacuum leak, that also can raise idle speed.

with your a/c issue, the compressor might be faulty and not engaging and disengaging. have the a/c system level checked and recharged if necessary...if okay, then start to check the clutch in the compressor to see if it kicking it or not...maybe the low side or high side switch...as for your idle, it really didn't sound like a distributor,.....to me it sounds like you have a faulty, Idle Air Control Motor in the throttle body allowing in too little air, and when a/c is on, its just right...have them both checked,
