Yes that could be the problem. but before you do that strip ur bike down and check your pistons if there is a hole or scratches visable you might need a top end rebuild

Dirtbike kick star

this happened with my sons pw50 where the piston ring had snapped and when it locked it was stuck bewteen the piston & bore

i would seek a shop or mechaninc to look at the top end and isnpect the piston & rings for wear or damage

dont keep kicking as this could result in further damage

My kx 60 wont kickstart but it will bump start

Sounds like low compression. Do a compression test, and it should have at least 90psi,..if not,its time to rebuild the top end..(piston,rings,bore)...pretty common for two strokes.

How to find out compression problem on a 2003 kx 250

Just cause the piston looks fine dosent mean the rings are still good did you do a compression test if you don't have one buy one they are great to have with 2 stroke bikes put the cylinder head back on and cover spark plug hole with finger it should first **** a bit then should blow finger off the hole the compression should be greater than 120 psi of a 125 not sure on the 250 rule of thumb if you have less than 120 your piston or rings is pooched..

Hi
Sounds like a broken piston ring, & now its embedded itself into the piston & / or barrel
Remove exhaust pipe & shine a light up into barrel / piston to inspect !!

Ride safe

Can you bore a sleeved cylinder from a standard 1991 Kawasaki kx 250 or will it need to be re-sleeved? Not sure if the cylinder sleeve is stock. My understanding is that Kawasaki installed factory sleeves...

If you say it is definately sleeved it should be possible to bore it, you normally get one or two oversizes before it needs resleeving. If you are able to buy an over size piston from kawa or wiseco, chances are it can be bored.

Kick start has no compression but runs fine once i get it going

Does it feel like yhe kick is even engaging and turning the crankshaft? Are you full stroking/kicking it over or short stroking it? when cold, are you using the choke. I suggest taking a compression test when it feels as if it hs no compression It could be undersized piston, rings, or a simple. good luck

Bore size

The cylinder bore is just that > the bore size of the cylinder. The piston clearance should be 0.0015 to 0.003. Anything more than .005 and the piston is too loose.

I have a1987 kawasaki kx 250. it is very hard to kick

Once u have the piston out then there is a tool you can use for extracting the rings or you can simply use strips of tin and slide it behind the rings from were the two ends of the ring meet and slide them round the piston. Be very careful when putting the new rings on because ther are quite brittle
