Question about 2000 Aprilia RSV Mille SP

Open Question

2002 RSV R1000. Top cylinder missfiring when engine started cold.

I have a 2002 RSV R1000. When the bike is started cold, the bottom cylinder fires but the top doesn't or misfires for the first 5 to 10 seconds. During this period the engine not only runs roughly but also makes a metalic clunking sound.

The top cylinder is week and runs lean at idle at any engine temperature. With the throttle open both cylinders perform equally well.

The engine is mechanically sound and has only 4500 kms on it.
I suspect a wiring problem from one of the sensors but I can't locate the problem.

you might want to check that your running on first mapping system and all derestrictors are taken out eg baffle in pipe on muffler and air box restrictor and cut second mapping system wire check out af1 raceing website for instructions how to do this yourself i have 01 rsvr factory and it stands up beutifuly at 8ooorpm thanks to af1 website

Take out the exhaust canister from the cylinder and check the exhaust port.It may be jammed from burned oil.Clean it very carefully by scratching it with a bended flat screw driver but don't scar the piston.While you are in there move the piston up and down to check for scratches.Also make sure the exhaust reed valve is working properly

have you pulled the clutch in ? maybe it thinks its still in gear adjust the neutral switch, ,maybe the starter is sticking can you by pass the start button with a wire from the battery to starter,

has the bike been serviced recently if so were the valve clearenes checked if not when were they last done i take it you have checked the obvious such as plugs and air filter if the plugs and filter are good i would get the valve clearences checked because this can cause poor cold starting and general perfomance hope this helps

I would check the compression on the engine. It should be about a hundred pounds and there should be no more than 10% difference between the cylinders. The next thing I'd do is check the primarys of the coil. Your bike came with a dual fire ignition system on it from the factory so this means that the ignition system is not stock. This is where I'd be suspicious. The coil will have three terminals on it if it's a single fire coil. Check between the center terminal and the outer terminals. You should have 2-3 ohms resistance from the center terminal to one of the outer terminals. Check center to one terminal, then center to the other terminal. If this checks good, it may be the ignition unit itself. Take the cover off of the timer cavity in the nosecone of your engine and go for a ride. If this cures the problem, then you know this is it, getting hot and misfiring. If it keeps missing, stop by a Radio Shack or an electronics supply house and purchase a small can of "component cooler". Ride the bike until it starts missing and spray a bit of the cooler on the ignition unit. See what happens. It could be a vacuum leak as well. Might be the intake to head gaskets or the intake manifold seal where the carb plugs in if the carb is stock.

You need to run a compression test on the engine. The cylinder pressure should be around a hundred pounds or more. There should be no more than 10% difference between the cylinders. If the compression is low enough to cause it not to fire, you probably have a blown head gasket.

You didn't mention what kind of igntion system you have in the bike. If you have the original ignition system, it's a dual fire system and both spark plugs fire at the same time every time the pistons come up to top dead center. This means that one cylinder fires on the exhaust stroke and this is called a "wasted spark" system. Harley has used this type of ignition for almost all their Bit Twins and Sportsters for many years. If your bike has an after market single fire ignition system, the ignition system could be bad causing the missfire. In this case, you would have an aftermarket coil as well with three primary connections on it.

Im working on a ford ranger 2002 with the v6. i just need to see a pic of the piston order and the coil pack order. im getting codes for 4..5..6 missfire but im not sure witch ones they are


Cylinders 1,2 and 3 are the cylinders on the passenger side and cylinders 4,5 and 6 are the cylinders on the driver's side. They are numbered front to rear. The coil pack will have the cylinder numbers marked on the top of it. The actual firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6
The top of your coil should look like this:

5 6 4

Your engine looks like this:
1 2 3
FRONT OF ENGINE
4 5 6

Rd500 running on 2 cylinders


ok so now its a 500 then!!! same engine in it,,,try cleaning the carbereter jets out and a new set of spark plugs wont hurt,,if its still missfiring check for spark if its there and a good spark have a compreshion test done as it could be 2 + 3 pistons have over heated or a head gasket blown

the only other things I can think of mate without looking, is put your hand over the silencer at tickover (when engine cold) and see if the the exhaust is blowing from somewhere. A new gasket should sort that. If you dropped it on the timing cover side it might be worth a look in there to see if there is any damage.

sounds like a leaking cylinder head gasket, this is the common symptom, cold miss fire.

These cars are famous for leaky seals where the valve cover interfaces with the cylinder head, at the spark plug journals. They fill with oil, short the coils and cause a misfire. Driving it any significant distance can destroy your catalytic converters ad unburnt fuel ignites therein, creating inferno-like conditions and a fire hazard too. You'll get a "300 code", such as 301 if cylinder 1 is misfiring, 302 for # 2, etc. Pull the coil off the spark plug for that cylinder and if it is moist at all, that's your issue. Have new seals put in, or you'll just keep blowing coils at $50 a whack.
