Question about 1986 Honda VT 500 C Shadow

1 Answer

Clearances Thresholds Clearances: I'm in the process of checking valve clearances. Did the front cylinder tonight, doing the rear tomorrow. I have a question on the clearance threshold. My clearances are given as .004 inch in the manual. I am able to pass a .005 through, though it is not smooth and requires some push. I am wondering whether this is enough of a discrepancy to adjust the clearance or not. One contributing factor is perhaps temperature. It is 40 degrees in the garage where I am working. I thought, given the cold, I should err on the side of too much clearance, given the expansion that will occur when heated/riding. Does this sound reasonable? Please let me know. Again, I can pass the .005, but not the .006, so I am one step above recommendation. Thanks for any help!

Other than the valve will be slightly noisier, no harm will be done.

Set valve clearance on 21hp briggs and statton

Valve clearances are set by either tappet screws in the lifters or on a lot of small engines, clearances must be set by either cutting out valve seats with a special cutter tool (to DECREASE clearances) or grinding the end of the valve (to INCREASE clearances) and generally are from .008-.010 on intake valves and .010-.012 on exhaust valves. Check engine specs to insure proper clearances.

Valve adjustment shims for Mazda protege 2002 2.0 litter engine. Dual over head cams 16 valve. Was bored out .020 inches over? What size if it was over bored out?

Three sizes of pistons are available:
1. Std.
2. Over size 0.010 in (0.25 mm).
3. Over size 0.020 in (0.50 mm).
Over sized pistons and rings are widely used in all automobiles with no trouble at all. They last for more than 200,000 km, provided if the engine oil, oil filter and air filters are replaced at the recommended intervals.
The most important point to consider here is to maintain the oil clearances between the various parts during the machining process.
For example piston to cylinder clearance, crankshaft to main journals and big ends clearance, valve to guide clearance, at room temperature. Then comes cleaning process and the engine assembling process.

Honda xr single carb, single cylinder, twin exhaust headers - one gets hotter than the other

Most likely cause is bad valve clearances. but could be the valves need grinding in. If you do the valve clearances you will probably increase the bikes' performance in terms of both power and economy.

Hi can someone tell me the valve clearances for a gsxr 750 wp 1993 please

There is more to properly setting the cams than just the clearances. Cam position, rotor position relative to sprocket position, and valve "2 cylinder sets" in a given rotor position. Below is the start of the process. FixYa limits the size of the answer files. My email address is tombones49@gmail.com. Email me and I can reply with a pdf file of the four pages in the service manual. Two of the pages are shim selection charts, Intake and Exhaust. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_255.gif

Back firing through back through the carbs on a Aprilia Pegaso 650 Cube. Any help?

I had a 4 stroke 500CC engine doing the same thing. It was sneezing fuel backwards out of the carburetor, and backfiring. I checked the valve clearances at Top Dead Center and found that I had no clearance on the intake valves. So, when compression would try to build, instead of staying inside the cylinder where it belonged, it shot backwards out of the intake (because the intake valves were ever so slightly open). So, check valve clearances and valve timing. Mine had to be set at .006 mm intake, and .010 mm exhaust. Runs perfectly now.

Starts missing and backfiring after running for 1-2 hours. Checked temp not overheating good spark, good compression, cleaned and adjusted carb

hi there it only starts to back fire when the engine is hot this points to incorect valve clearances os slightly damaged valve seats this is only oticable when the engine is hot due to heat expansion the clearancea would be an easy fix but to doo valve seats the cylinder head would have to be removed which is quite a big jo although i would try the valve clearances first unfortunatly i do not have the clearances but im sure i atv shop would tell you or if you have the manufacturers service repair manual it will te you in there hope this helps ben

Valve clearances

On the intake 0.0008 or 0.0020 (it's in between these 2)

this is for the stem to guide clearance. (for the intake)

The Exhaust 0.0018 to 0.0030 stem to guide clearance.
